Menu items types get priority in order to select alternative layouts. As documentation says:

As with component layouts, category layouts only will show if (1) they are specified for the category in the global or category parameters and (2) there is no menu item specifically for this category (for example, List Contacts in a Category, List Newsfeeds in a Category, List Weblinks in a Category, Category List, Category Blog).

But i'm getting crazy because I would like to assign an alternative article layout to all the articles assigned in a category! I would like articles to inherit the alternative layouts from the parent category, but this is not working, i can select altenrative layouts for category view but not for the inside articles. This should be so fast but it isnt: I can select an alternative article for each articles but this is not convenient and easy for front-end editing.

Also the fact that alternative category layouts cant be associated with menu items (forcing to duplicate the alternative layouts to menu items type adding the xml) it's terrible.

Please help me if you have suggestions, I'm losing hours and hours
