I have installed joomla on my computer and localhost will not display I have to enter 127.0.0.1 for the server configuration to appear so as I can get to the PHP link

I am useing wampsserver.

Any Idea why local host wont display. I have never encountered this before.

I am assuming you use a newer verison of windows as you are using wamp.

open c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in notepad or any other plain text editor and check that localhost points to 127.0.0.1

As a side note, you can always assign other fake dns hosts to 127.0.0.1. Just add it in the hosts file. You can assign multiple hosts to the same IP.

I always have 127.0.0.1 set as just "q" for ease of use. This way you can just type in q/sitename in your browser, just a small timesaver compared to typing localhost/sitename.

it will work fine, just check your hosts file at the path mentioned above. Instructions are in the file.

hi, yes you need to save it without the file extension, as you can see in the dialog box you are trying to save it as *.txt, it needs to be extensionless, just "hosts"

I just tried what you suggested but the only options I had to save in the SaveAs dropdown were : Text documents (*.txt) Or All files (*.txt)

Try saving it as "all files".

I tought it was weird you werent allowed to save as txt, tried this myself and I was allowed to save as txt in that folder. You need to be logged in as administrator to edit
system files. Tried it on exactly the same system you have w7x64 (ultimate).

yes, but notepad will still add the .txt extension if you dont select "all files" in the dropdown below.

If all fails, you could always save the file as something else, rename it in win explorer to "hosts". (You may need to turn off "hide extensions for known file types") And then replace the hosts file. Remember to backup original! :)
