I have a menu that is a articles category list. When I click on the menu, I get not only the articles in the specified category, but also all of the articles in the subcategories of that category. The list makes no distinction about the articles being in subcategories.

This happens when I make a menu for articles category blog, as well.

Can anyone help me understand how to have just the articles in the category show up? I want my users to have to drill down into the subcategory if they want those - I don;t want them all mixed together when at a higher level!
I've tried hiding and showing subcategories in all the places I can find, and that seems to display subcategories at the bottom of the list or not.

Article Manager Options/Category/Subcategory Levels = None
Menu Manager(Edit Menu Item)/Category Options/Subcategory Levels = None

Joomla 2.5.6

I'm currently trying to figure out the very same thing. Can anyone please help?

I want the menu item to link to a category and display only a list of subcategories, then each subcategory to link to a list of articles within it.

Currently the menu item links to a list of all articles within the whole category and subcategories with a list of subcategories below.

It is quite challenging as there are quite a few options to set.

What I would suggest for starters is

(1) Got to Article Manager and select Options.

(2) Click on Articles and set all options to either Hide or No. For Show "Read More" you may want to specify Show.

(3) Do the same for Category and Categories.

(4) You may want to specify the options for Blog/Featured Layouts

By doing this, we can either specify "Use Global", or leave as default, within each menu item where we use a Category Blog.

Within each blog Menu Item, check carefully all the options within both Category Options and Blog Layout Options.

It sounds like you may have specified the wrong value for Category Order in the Blog Layout Options.

I don't know about clancyw but as far as I'm aware I've set all of the options, both global and local (categories and menus). It seems that I may have missed one, or I need to jump through some different hoops to get what I want.

Please read my post above again so you can see specifically what I'm trying to achieve.

(I have just upgraded from 1.5 where this was the normal behaviour with sections and categories.)

You must set the Category Sort Order on the Menu Item. If "No Order" is set all articles will be listed regardless of category.

I have Category Order and Article Order in "Lists Layouts" both set to "Title Alphabetical".

Ah, the Shared options was set to No Order. Now I only get a list of articles from one particular subcategory....

*Sigh* Thanks, maybe I can at least home in on that now.

Steve

I have tried something similar but not sure if its what you want.

I have set my menu item to Category List.

Go to http://www.didim.me and select List Categories - Test

I have nothing in my top category.

I have 4 subcats, as listed, but it does not show the articles.
Did you want to see the articles within each subcat or just the list?

Sorry, I did this on my localhost.

All I am gettings is

"There are no articles in this category. If subcategories display on this page, they may
contain articles.
Subcategories

Hotels
Leisure
Property
Restaurants "

Was this what you wanted?

Steve, where do you see the "Shared Options" you mentioned?
I've tried turning everything off as suggested by Potus001 and adding a Sort Order as suggested by Per Yngve Berg, but regardless, I get, first a list of all articles in the top level AND all sub categories, then a list of subcategories (if I enable that option)

I notice that in the content/article manager in the back end, when I choose a high level category as a filter, it shows everything in the sub categories, too. In this case - the backend - I can set max levels to 1 and have just the articles category show.

On the menu (Content Category List), I can set Subcategory levels, but that only changes the display at the end of the list of articles.

I have it working how I want in 1.5, I just want to replicate this in 2.5. For example.

http://www.stmichaelsrc.org/parents

This is what I have so far in 2.5

http://upgrade.stmichaelsrc.org/jupgrad ... hp/parents

(I have to say that so far this feels like a step backwards.)

Go to Category or Article Manager and go to the options there (right hand side, next to Help).

Thanks for the help.
I set up a new installation of Joomla, and it works as expected, i.e. It only shows the articles for the level I specify.
I'll poke through and see if I can find what setting is different. (I just spent a few minutes and could not find anything that *was* different, but there has to be something, somewhere.) If I don't find anything, I'll try switching templates and turning off modules, etc.
I have a workaround, so it's not vital, but it sure would be nice to figure out what is changing the expected behavior....

Steve,
Going back and reading what you are trying to do, I have a suggestion for you.
Your Menu Item is defined as a Category List, which by default shows all the items in the category, then can show sub categories or not.
Try changing your Menu Item to type: List All Categories and then choose your top level category in the required settings.
This should give you the behavior you have in the 1.5 site.
