"Allow Empty Search" and "connection was reset"

This is about Smart Search. Following scenario:
- Enable "Allow Empty Search"
- Go to Search page
- Enter no search criterion string
- Search
Expected result: all content returned
Actual result: no results returned

Then:
- Go to Search page
- Enter no search criterion string
- Set Author filter to some author
- Search
Expected result: all content of that author returned
Actual result: the browser says: "connection was reset", nothing in error log

P.S.: as far as I'm concerned, searching deserves its own board

And to add to my own post, I'd be happy to look into the cause of this, but I simply don't know where to find any info regarding the connection reset, it does not show up in my PHP log.
