How to upload a pdf and have it displayed on a menu item?

I can upload a jpg via the media manager / phocadownload, but it won't let me upload a pdf through that route.

Also, it is not clear to me how to link an uploaded pdf to a menu.

Help for this struggling new-be would be appreciated.

Just upload it through the regular media manager, and link to its location on your Joomla website using an external link menu item.

When I use Media Manager to upload a pdf file, I get the message "Not a valid image."

At least I have now managed to upload the file in Media Manager by turning off "Restrict Uploads" in the Options menu - application/pdf was already allowed in the MIME types.

Why was it necessary to turn that off? I am an Administrator, which I expect is one level above "Manager".

The external link menu worked a treat (even for an internal link) - thanks for that.
