1.7.3 site partly non-responsive

Sorry to post in the 2.5 forum but there appears to be no 1.7 forum.

I've a 1.7.3 Joomla! site that has suddenly stopped responding to some links and buttons in the BE. Ex: in the article manager, pressing the New button does virtually nothing. Ticking the box in front of one of the articles then pressing new gives me an error popup saying I must first select an item.

In other areas it may be the cancel button that doesn't work, or the links to open a plugin, etc.

Tried a couple different browsers on a couple different devices. Same results.

This is very odd. Does anyone have any insights?

UPDATE: Attempting to add new article via top dropdown menu (Content > Article Manager > Add new article) gives me an error: Infinite loop detected in JError on an otherwise blank page.

Joomla 1.7.3 is not supported anymore, you should update to Joomla 2.5
