Sometimes it takes several minutes to access my site both as user and administrator. I reported this to my service provider (Site5) and they responded as below.

Hello David,

As a test to determine a site speed baseline I cached your entire index page to the following location:

http://farmoor.org/index.cached.html

This rules out any PHP or MySQL processing slow downs. As you can see the cached page is very fast. However, some of the elements on that page do take some time to process. For example, the following CSS files took 1 second to load, each:

While the following JavaScript took 6 seconds to load:

You should consider minifying or combining some of your CSS and JS files so there isn't such a large delay while they are processed.

Trouble is, I have no idea what this means. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

On further pressing, the service provider responded:

Thank you for getting back to us. I'm afraid we can't do much to bring your web-site online while the issue isn't fixed since it is exceeding the number of available slots for your user. The one thing we can do is to kill the php sessions already made by your user, so that may provide you with a short time frame to work on this.

When I said I didn't know what they were talking about, they advised me to hire a web developer . The main reason I like and use Joomla is so that I don't have to understand all this 'under the covers' stuff, and I don't have to use professional web developers.

I don't know how much traffic your site gets. The hosting subscription may be to small for the traffic generated.

There is something you can do to improve performance:

1) Enable caching in joomla (Site->Global Configuration->Server). What options are available will depend on what kind of cache your server is equipped with.
2) Optimize the number of files loaded as your host suggested. That have to be done in your template. Ask your template developer.

You are running an outdated version of joomla. Update to 2.5.28 ASAP.
The current version is 3.4.3. Start planning for an upgrade.

Note: Your site loaded fast when I tested it. It may be a spam bot that are accessing your site and slows it down. You can block it in .htaccess.

Hi,
I had already turned caching on and I have now found out how to optimise the template files and it hasn't really made any difference. I suspect that the problem is elsewhere, as it is particularly slow when working in administrator - just logging in can take a couple of minutes.
However, I take your point about being out of date. I had been putting off the upgrade but maybe now I have to bite the bullet and get on with it. There is no point in fixing something I'm about to replace.
