Language stuck

Post by escozul » Sat Nov 22, 2014 1:32 am

Hello all,

I have the site located at www.coffeelife.gr

This site is bilingual for both english and greek languages with the greek being the default. Normally a user would visit, select english and be able to see english.

However Today, out of the blue, while everything was working fine, After clearing the cache to see a couple of changes I noticed that selecting english, from the drop down menu no longer functioned! I would get the url www.coffeelife.gr/en but the content would be in greek!

No matter what I tried all content was stuck to greek.
I even disabled all caching plugins but still the content was persistent to greek!

When trying a different browser, I seem to be able to display the page in english by pasting the link www.coffeespots.gr/en on the address line but then, for that browser the site is stuck in english.

I'd appreciate any help
thank you.

Yes I use native joomla multilanguage functionality.

Both plugins for language and module for language switcher are enabled and working. The site is more or less static. It's only a product catalogue. Has not been updated and has been like that for months now. Suddenly yesterday the language switcher stopped working.

It's one of the weirdest things I've ever encountered and that's why I turn to the public domain for help! :D

Your site does not open at all. Check your server.

um... it does...
I can see it.

However if you're using a windows xp machinge, the ssl encryption uses TLS 1.3 so it will not work.
We carefully considered the use of a legacy site for XP machines but it simply not worth it. So ... on XP the site appears broken.

Maybe that's why it appears it is not working.

The problem persists though. I cannot use the language switcher to switch languages... :(

Still, I see no problems.

Just installed opera to test if there are some incompatibilites. None found. The site loads fine. Still language switcher does not work!

This drives me nuts!

Is there anyone that has any suggestions on this?
I suppose it should not be that hard to solve.

New update:

It seems that the issue is persistent and connected to the default language. When I set default language as greek, the site is stuck to that language. Greek all the way! If I set it to english, it goes english all the way!

This is so weird!

So just the default language is available, and although the language suffixes are set correctly they get ignored.

So http://www.coffeelife.gr is the same as http://www.coffeelife.gr/en (when default language is set to english)

I have to debug this... does anyone have some tips? I'd love to see if there are any suggestions.

(btw I get NO php errors on the server.)

Edit: Ok new update.
Its really worth checking out: www.coffeelife.gr and see how the language switcher works. Have never seen anything like it!

I enabled the browser language sniffing to see what happens. If that worked I could get some of the language functionality of my site back. So it did work. sort of: now each user that connects to the site, has his default language as set by the browser settings. So users can select a language in the browser (some but not all do) and have the site appear in that language. However the language switcher still won't work to make the other language available. It will keep reverting back to the default language of the browser. This looks so much like a joomla error. I just don't know where to look. I even tried a different language switcher to no avail.

Please attach here a screenshot of the admin multilanguagestatus module
http://community.joomla.org/blogs/commu ... odule.html

and check that your site follows the tutorial (you can access back-end on that demo site)
