Hi there,

I've followed the instruction to create a multi-language web site and the demo is OK. But the language icons are not displayed on the page. I don't know where the icons come from. Please help.

Thank you very much.

The icons you are referring to are coming from the directory \media\mod_languages\images.

Have you chosen the appropriate options to show the Flag Icons in the module Language Switcher?

Hi there,

Sorry for the late response.
Here is the screenshot. One icon should be US flag and the other is China flag.
What options can I choose for showing flag icons?

Thank you very mcuh!

No screenshot attached.

In the Module Manager, after opening the Language Switcher module for edit, you have to set the following options to view the flags.

Use Dropdown: No
Use Image Flags: Yes

Hi imanicham,

I've checked the settings and they are all in the roles and I've made sure the flag icons are there in the /media/mod_languages/images directory. But I found the src value of the img tag of the flag is "/jatestsite/"
Code:
<img src="/jatestsite/" alt="chinese-prc" title="chinese=prc">

It suppose to be /jatestsite/media/mod_languages/images/zh.gif. But I don't know why it get only /jatestsite/?

Thanks

Which version of Joomla are you using?
Have you modified mod_languages?
What happens when you choose dropdown instead of flags?

The version is Joomla! 2.5.2 and I did not modify mod_languages. Here are the screenshots of dropdown choice and total modules in the backend.
This is a fresh installation of Joomla 2.5.2 without any other extensions. I just worked on the multiple language support followed the instructions of the guide.

Thanks.

Hi there,

I am going to re-install Joomla 2.5.3 and do the language processing from beginning again. After the new installation and the language packages, I cannot find the US flag in the media/mod_languages/images. Where can I find it?

Thanks.

Yep, I got it after re-installed Joomla and went through the steps. Maybe, I didn't set the Default Page to Yes for the menu items in the early practice. Is that true?
But I still have a question. How can I get the titles of the Language Switcher and Login Form to different languages (in this case - chinese)?

The icons are language related - not country related. So, for English, you would only find an icon named en.gif, where en is the language code.

If you want to show the US flag, you could create a new icon and refer that in the Content Language.

Create multiple instances of login modules, one for each language. Make sure to assign each module to an individual language.

The above is true for the language switcher module.

Thank you.
So, if I have English, Chinese, I have to create three instances of a module, another one for default (all). Is it right?

Just create two - one for English and another for Chinese. The reason being, if a language is not assigned to a module, it would show up in all the languages.

Thanks a lot, Master.
But, I've got another question.
What I did so far is setting multiple languages for displaying articles. What if I have some pages which are developed in a component? Those pages are created in the view directories. How can I handle the two languages issue?
Perhaps, I can put the context in both en-GB and zh-CN ini files. But, how much text does an entrance of the ini file have? For example,
PAGE_CONTEXT="......"
What will the max size of PAGE_CONTEXT be?

Thank you.

Not sure I understand.
Ini files are used for the User Interface, not for contents, whatever they are.
If your component is coded correctly, a choice is presented to tag items to a specific language.
What do you call "context" here?

Thank you, Mr. Master.
The "context" means one or more paragraphs of text in a page of a view. For example, the description of how to utilize the functionality of that page. For multi-language in an article, I can create two version of it. But what about multi-language in a view. Two views?

Thanks.

Views can use constants:

<?php echo JText::_('COM_MYCOMPONENT_SOME_TEXT'); ?>

Then, it's just a matter of adding the constant and value in the ini file.
COM_MYCOMPONENT_SOME_TEXT="Whatever I need to display, as long as I wish, including some html"

Yep, that was what I thought about. The question was that weather there is any limitation of text size to this constant?

Hello, I have been looking through posts for an issue I am having with the langswitcher icons not appearing at all.
the site has been upgraded from a 1.6 to the latest Joomla version. I am not sure whether this is related to the issue I am having..

I have tried looking through firebug but it doesn't report that any icons should be appearing at all there. The languages are active and the image prefixes (en/ru/el) as should be. I just don't understand what is the problem there..
please help!

Thanks for any feedback!
