Hello;

I'm trying to add French to an existing site, and have the basics all working, but can't get menu item associations to work.

Here's how I currently have it set up:

Joomla 2.5.4
Cache off
SEF on
One main menu with all menu items assigned to all.
One English menu with a Contact Us item assigned to English, and associated to the French menu item Contactez-nous.
One French menu with a Contactez-nous item assigned to French, and associated to the English menu item Contact us.
Both "Contact Us" menu items point to a single article.
Language switcher displayed on all pages.

When I try to use menu item associations, clicking the French flag while viewing Contact Us in English takes me to the French home page instead of Contactez-nous. The English flag also takes me to the English home page while I've viewing French. In other words, it's acting as if I don't have item associations set.

I've cleared browser cache, even restarted them (FF and Chrome).

Is there some step I missed?

Thanks!
Dave

What do you mean? To which language is that article assigned to?
Do you have other menu associations working OK?

The article itself (that the menu items poins to) is assigned to All because I'm using MultilanguageCK, which allows me to put all languages in a single article using {langck=fr_FR}asdf{/langck}.

I have one other menu association set up the same way - the menu item in each language is associated with the other - that does the same thing.

Thanks for the help!

I have no experience with MultilanguageCK.

Do you have other Menu associations working OK ? I mean not using this, but between "normal" menu items tagged to a specific language and linking to an article tagged also to the same language.

I think I see what's going on. Reading between the lines of your question, can this aspect of using menu item associations be summed up as follows:

This requires that the articles themselves need to be assigned a language, and hence be duplicated for each language. The menu item for each language would then be pointed to the article in that language. Pointing the menu items for each language to the same article assigned to "All" will not work.

If that's the case, I know what's going on and can go from there.

Regards,
Dave R.

Hello,

I have a similar problem. I test joomla 2.5.6 installed in a subfolder (the main site is joomla 1.5), address: http://www.aspekt.ro/25/index.php/ro/ But in my case, I have the article translated in three languages (also menus, moduls etc.). In the article, the language switcher still redirects to the corresponding home page, not to the article in that language, which I want. I tried with different settings in Language Filter plugin, also Menu associations on/off without success. I made also hours of search on Google, but nothing helps.

Once again, folks, joomla 2.5.x provides ONLY menu items associations.
This means that if you have no specific menu item to load a specific article and no corresponding associated menu item in other languages for corresponding article, you may be redirected to the home page or to the parent menu item --IF that one is associated.

Thanks for the quick answer, but please tell me if I understood correctly. The language switcher from the three translated page redirects to previous (home) page because they are associated only with a link from there? And if I would have a menu on the home page with one menu item (instead of that link) pointing to the article, the language switcher from the article would redirects to the corresponding page in another language? I can modify my custom template, to introduce a new menu to the home page, but I have to know, if this is the right way. Or there exist another solution for this problem? Thanks in advance! And sorry for my bad english...

If there are no menu associations, the redirect when using language switcher will always redirect to the home page in the chosen language.
If a menu item is associated to a menu item tagged to another language, then the language switcher will redirect to that menu item.
Home (en-GB)
menu item A to article in en-GB (associated with menu item to article B in fr-FR)

Accueil (fr-FR)
menu item B to article in fr-FR (associated with menu item to article A in en-GB)

Thank you Infograf;

I now understand that you have to have a duplicate article in each language assigned to the menu item for the switcher to work without redirecting to Home. Having both English and French menu items pointing to the same article, which contains content in both languages, will not work.

Thanks again,
Dave
