[SOLVED] Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
Hi,
I've set up a bilingual website which works great for guests. However, when a user with a language preference logs in, I get an error message that the website generates endless redirects (e.g. Chrome: 310 (net::ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS)). This occurs regardless of whether I'm using SEF URLs or not. If I do, the URL the browser is trying to resolve is /index.php/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en, if I don't the URL is /index.php?lang=en.
I can avoid this error message by turning off Automatic Language Change in the Language Filter Plugin. However, in that case the UK flag in the Language Switcher module disappears and the user cannot view the page in English (at least after switching to German once).
I'm using Joomla! 2.5.6, php 5.3.13 and MySQL 5.1. SEF URLs on or off doesn't make a difference and I'm using htaccess.txt.
The website URL is http://www.es-rm-eltern.eu. If you want to reproduce the error you can log in using the username 'test' and the password 'test'.
Any ideas would be welcome!

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
Please test with a default template (Beez) and report here.
Also, there is something wrong in your site:
When I try to login with test/test in administrator, I get a 500 instead of
"You do not have access to the administrator section of this site."
You may have some corrupted files in your install.

Tested with Beez5, same issue. I switched back to my template for now.
Thanks for pointing me towards ther error 500 issue. That was due to incorrect permission settings for my log folder, I fixed that now. Also, the test-user now has admin-privileges.

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
I could not solve your issue.
I changed the password for the testing superadmin you posted here (never post credentials in public)
Suggestions:
Disable all 3rd party extensions and reenable them one by one if it solves the issue
Test locally the same site to make sure the issue is not related to your hosting.

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
Thanks for looking into it for me. Did I understand you correctly, that you did encounter the problem I described? Then at least I'd know that it's not a user error on my side.
I will follow your suggestion with the 3rd party extensions and see whether that takes me anywhere. If I do get anywhere I will post my findings here.

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
I'm not much further. I did learn a few things, though:
1. The problem persists even when all 3rd party extensions have been disabled.
2. Upon disabling of community builder the problem exists regardless of the Automatic Language Change setting.
3. The problem also causes the Language Switcher Module to be flawed for logged in users: When set to show flags it only shows one flag for logged in users. When set to show text, no text appears. When set to show drop down field shows empty drop down field only
The search continues...

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
I still haven't solved the problem but did find out the following: The Redirect problem occurs when a users language preference is different from the site's default language. So when the site's default language is German the problem occurs when the user selects English as preferred language and when the site's default language is English the problem occurs when the user selects German as preferred language. I would say that this rules out any issues with the language pack themselves.
I am absolutely lost at this point, starting to get desperate. If anyone has had similar problems in the past I would be grateful for any ideas!

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
Have you tested on a local with XAMPP or MAMP, using default .htaccess?

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
I'm afraid I don't know how to do that. Can you download the entire website somehow, including the MySQL-database? Is there a tutorial you could point me towards?
I also want to call my webhoster's support line and see if they can help me. Any idea what potential server-side issues could be so I can address them directly?

Re: Endless redirects with Automatic Language Change
I got it! I had set up a separate ACL level for non-logged in users only ("guest"). When I installed the content languages in Language Manager - Content I must have set the access code for both English and German to "guest" instead of to "public". Therefore, once a user logged in, he didn't have access to the content languages anymore and this caused the error.
I must say, I am relieved, that I got that sorted out. Thanks a lot for your help and your efforts, Jean-Marie!

Re: [SOLVED] Endless redirects with Automatic Language Chang
Glad you found the issue!!
Now, we should find a way to throw an error in that case.
