Hi, I think many of us are struggling to have a usable multi-language system in Joomla, since Joomfish after 6 months of 2.5 release is still in alpha (and it's not a good news for future support of new versions) and native system provides no way of linking item in different languages except for menus (menu item associations).
Can we have at least category item and article item association in Joomla 3.0 or 3.1? I think it should not be cumplicated to add that and at least we have an official place where the links are hold and also some extensions could then build more sophisticated management features (list of untraslated items and so no)?
I saw that in Joomla pool idea the improvement of multilanguage is among the top 10 requests but found no mention of trying to put in next Joomla version...
cheers

Giuse

Alas, it is not as simple as you think.
We tried, Christophe Demko and I, to do it already in 2.5 and have not succeeded (Routing issues)
I wish someone would propose a patch but nobody volunteered.

It's really a pity, since multilanguage is such a wide need.
I am available to test but not able to propose a patch: any possibility of setting an announcement on joomla site to ask for help? There are good php programmers around, and this would be a good goal :)
cheers

At least would be good to have the functionality in backend to set the associations between categories and articles, even if the routing between them is not supported. We would have a standard joomla to store associations that can be used by plugins waiting for a full joomla support. I think just setting the association in the DB is not hard....
What do you think?
Cheers

I found the Joomla Multilingual tutorial very helpful, although there was a lot to digest.

Updating any product, not just Joomla, can be fraught with difficulties when adding a new feature, as to implement it may need a major re-write (and this is not intended as a criticism of the original or current developers).

Why would you want to link articles and categories?

Items associations would permit the same results as menu items associations. i.e. when displaying an article (or category) in one language, clicking on the language switcher would redirect to the associated item in the chosen language, whether there is or not a menu item to these.

Try KMFasTrans: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/languages/multi-lingual-content/20640

It has the option to link articles in multiple languages so you can edit them all in one screen. Also you can link menu's.
The free version only offers view, but you can see already quite good how it works. And it is not expensive.
According the developer they will have a version which can handle K2 items.

Further you can try FaaLang. It's basicly Joomfish and working well in J2.5.

KMFasTrans has nothing to do with this topic.
Another extension also helps creating translations on a per item basis, Josetta
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... tent/20136

These extensions facilitate the creation and maintenance of corresponding items in different languages but, afaik, they do not implement associations when Browsing using the Switcher module, as menu items associations do.
