How to set homepage to / instead of /index.php/en

Hello,

I have a multilanguage joomla 1.7 website configured to use english and italian (default) with the language filter plugin.

When I write the website URL it opens http://www.mywebsite.com/index.php/it but I would like it to open just the root http://www.mywebsite.com

How can I change it?

It is high time that you upgrade your site to 2.5.6 as more improvements have been made on the multilingual site development features. Also, 1.7.x is no longer supported.

Do you have Italian as the default Site Language?

In 2.5.6, the following options are available in the plug-in "System - Language Filter":
Language Selection for new Visitors (Site Language or Browser Settings)
Automatic Language Change (No or Yes)
Menu associations (No or Yes)
Remove URL Language Code (No or Yes)
Add alternate meta tags (No or Yes)

As you may notice with the combination of the options Language Selection for new Visitors and Remove URL Language Code, you could achieve what you want.

If you decide to upgrade, make necessary precautions to back-up your site files (along with sub-directories) and the database content by exporting it using the tool/utility such as phpMyAdmin).
