Hello,
I'm a beginner. I just built http://stephenmadigan.ca and all the internal links are fine.

BUT

If I google Stephen Madigan, and then click on the links below his home page heading (eg. references, narrative therapy...)
Google calls a 404 error page rather than linking to the actual page (I mean I'm getting an error)

What I've done -
I followed the steps to remove index.php from the sitelinks - making them seo friendly, I believe
I've created a custom 404 error page as a bandaid for now, but I want google to get it right!
I've submitted a sitemap to google.

What should I do? Why is this happening?

I think you have changed your URL structures for that narrative therapy. Your old url for narrative therapy got cached and not the new URL (http://www.stephenmadigan.ca/counseling ... rapy-guide). I guess this is the problem. Main issue in the joomla is it creates duplicate pages when we try to change the article url. So if you want to avoid that 404 error page , you can demote that link in your google webmaster tools. If you do that google won't list the particular link. Hope it helps you!! And i see the references page is doing well.

Hi, thanks for your answer. That is, in fact, what I did - I demoted one of the bad links using google webmaster. But what if I want the right links (with the same title) to show?

Google sitelinks are automatically generated by google. Till now google didn't give a clear idea of how it generates, sadly only thing is we can demote the link. But there is no option for adding our desired page to the sitelink. And remember you can demote only 100 links.

Wait for the google to cache your website next time and your sitelinks will get changed.
