1. Optimized Page Titles - can be found on the menu item parameters
2. Optimized Meta description - can be found at the same place
3. Search Engine friendly URL's - can use a 3rd party plug in, or go to configuration settings
4. Image tags & correct image naming
5. Always include your sitemap
6. Make sure your sitemap is submitted to Google webmaster tools

Also, SEOmoz is a good website for information on SEO and is a site I go to frequently for new information. They have a very good beginners guide to SEO booklet available online. It's a good read and highly recommended.

If you have time, read all the comments as well. I got something from comments too.

Cheers.

Is it recommended that you change the meta descriptions for each page? I have hundreds of pages on my website and would never be able to update all of them!

The most important things when doing SEO for Joomla

URLs are a very important factor in ranking. Enable two things to fix them:
SEF URLs- Search Engine Friendly URLs removes variables from URLs
URL Rewriting - removes index.php from urls

Use meta description and title tags. If you want you can use also meta keywords.

Create a rule in .htaccess that redirects www to non-www, or non-www to www. It's important. If search engine indexes both versions you'll have duplicate content and PR dilution.

Check your robots.txt. If there is a disallow rule for /images directory remove it.

Don't forget site speed. Google builds fast products and knows the value of a fast UX. This shouldn't be underestimated.

Yes, because it is considered duplicate content. If pages are duplicate then Google does not see this as a good thing. I would surely do it manually, it's worth the effort.

Try to the following steps:

1)Do use Joomla!’s friendly content management interface to optimize texts, images and links the easy way.

2)Do use Joomla!’s built-in SEO or a third-party extension (if your site is fairly complex) to generate search engine friendly urls.

3)Do take the time to manage your content effectively.

4)Do get your website indexed by Google and Yahoo!

5)Do take the time to promote your website

My website http://www.academiceagles.com has been doing badly in SERPs and was wondering which would be the best way to turn it around. Any assistance is highly appreciated.

The usual things that you would do to a regular site would still be working for joomla. Things such as:

1. Tags
2. Directory Structure
3. Responsiveness
4. External Backlinks

Yes, this is/not a problem. Meta Descriptions do not really do anything for SEO in regards to the search engines. They do not look at this for anything. They are strictly for user click through. They all pickup something without entering it anyway. Not always what you want but..

Page titles are important and should be done and a relevant H1 tag on each page.

Not that I am an expert.
