Re: No follow backlinks
Dofollow links are good to get PR. But its hard to answer nofollow links boost search ranking.
Anyway more links (nofollow or dofollow) from quality sites it better.

Re: No follow backlinks
Nofollow backlinks doesn't help you directly to rank higher position. I mean that nofollow backlinks is good to introduce your website. So people can come your websites through your nofollow backlinks (such as blog comments). You can increase your traffic. It need times to rank higher position.
Do follow is better to increase your position. Submit your websites in directories is not a good way. If you use Joomla to build your website and it looks nice, why you don't upload it to Joomla showcase. It's really good to get backlink

Re: No follow backlinks
In my point of view, No follow links also matter, Although some claim that Search engines do not crawl the no follow links but who knows the search engine follows them or not!!

Re: No follow backlinks
Google announced the nofollow attribute (to get spam out) in the link, after that the Yahoo and Bing "agreed" with Google, so probably "nofollow" makes difference. If you are trying to fix your site in Google, it's very important to dofollow. But links are not "anymore" so important than they were before, because of Google algorithms change, they always go wider, meaning the % of importance gets lower.

Re: No follow backlinks
nofollow does help anyone telling you otherwise either are mistaken or work for Google! a Link is a Link, Relevance is key not nofollow/follow, nofollow + Relevance = GOOD! follow + Relevance = GOLDEN!
Build links regardless if they are nofollow or follow, remember Relevance is key, not page rank, not the attritibues and be sure whatever platform you are using to leave your link ensure to obey by their rules because, a link which ages becomes more valuable so if your spamming keywords on a blog which doesn't allow keywords in the name field your better off using your actual name so the link sticks, and helps your site look more REPUTABLE.
