I have site with many categories and many articles. Articles with with same category are used in different menus in different modules. Now Joomla 1.7 using strange urls for that articles.

Example:

I have two different articles linked from two different submenus but both using same category. Url is http://www.domain.com/mainmenu1/submenu1/articlename1 and for other article http://www.domain.com/mainmenu2/submenu2/articlename2.

Is possible that url is http://www.domain.com/category/article and that is not important from which menu or submenu is linked.

I remeber that joomla 1.5 has urls built on that way.

I would build menu system this way to achieve that:

Top menu:
category 1
link1>article 1
category 2
category 3
link2>article 2
link3>article 3

Another menu:
menu alias>link 2>article 2

There are many extensions that allow you to change URL structure. Just look for an SEF extension in the directory.

Usually shorter URLs perform better in search engines but if your site contains content on diverse topics then using the sub-category in URL might be a good idea.
