Hello,
I'm not very familiar with working with .htaccess files. I have a question regarding one site that I created. It's hosted with Rochen, I've never altered it myself either except to add the mod_rewrite function into it according to the instructions I found somewhere within the joomla wiki.

My question is this, in the root folder, the same folder that contains my public_html folder that contains the site files, there is an .htaccess file. Then, if I click on my public_html folder, I now have within this folder an .htaccess file, an .htaccess.original file, an htaccess.txt file, and a new_htaccess file without extension. I know the htaccess.txt is the original and to use it I would change it to .htaccess, but that's about all I know here.

Which one of these would be the main .htaccess file for the site, it must be the one in the root folder containing the public_html folder, or the .htaccess that is within the public_html folder.

I need to unblock public access to /tmp in my sites .htaccess file. I'm somewhat nervous as I know a typo could crash the site :(.

Any advice or does anyone know of good online resources for working with .htaccess as it relates to joomla?

Hmm, well, the .htaccess file in your "public_html" folder is the one you want to edit to make changes.

BUT... I would not advise making changes to allow access to your "tmp" folder, or any other Joomla folders, as this can cause some major security headaches.

Hey Ryan,
Thanks for clearing that up for me, I suspected that was the case, I'd still like to find out why all the redundancy..

I posted this since I'm having a problem with sh404sef. Originally it worked properly but for some reason it's not showing the social media graph images in the admin/backend area.

I did go to the support for sh404sef, their response to me was "I think your problem is cause by some wrong permissions on your website server, as if you`ll try to access directly those sh404sef images you`ll receive a server 500 error:

http://www.gdc-digitalservices.com/tmp/ ... eviews.png

So I think you should contact your webhosting company and ask them about this"

I'm not very pleased with the answer and have made it known to them politely. But, I'm not at all familiar with all the aspects of .htaccess outside of the basics of renaming it from htaccess.txt to .htaccess if I want to use it.

I then went to my hosting company, Rochen, and they told me "In this context "public" means "accessible via HTTP through your browser", so that would still count as public access. I've checked your account and you are blocking public access to /tmp in that .htaccess file, thank you."

I wish I knew of a wiki or tutorial that went into depth over managing the server side of a joomla site since I'm somewhat clueless to it and really don't have or know of any good resources outside of this forum, which is where I've pretty much learned most of my stuff regarding joomla.

I'm open to any suggestions, I'm trying to interpret the responses from sh404sef and Rochen in order to figure out what to do next..?

I need to amend my earlier response. You can access files in your "tmp" folder, as long as you have the exact URL to that file. Joomla does not allow you to explore this folder (as it is set in the .htaccess file).

What this means, is that the file that is supposedly being created by sh404sef is not being created, or is no longer in your tmp folder. I have not used this extension, so I unfortunately can't offer much support there, but you may want to check your settings, and see if you can switch the path to another folder, for creating those analytics graphs.
