htaccess set-up

Hi,
I'm having problems setting up my htaccess properly to handle missing pages, is it possible that someone could tell me how to set the htaccess up, or better still post a screen shot please "that would be a massive help"
Someone kindly tested a page for me that would have to be missing and it returned a 200 response, when it should return a 404. they did get directed to the 404 handling page, but apparently I'm not set up properly for missing pages.

is it htaccess.txt or .htaccess???

I don't really know, as I know very little about this side of things and my web designer has been trying to sort it out, the guy who tested one of the pages for me said that I needed this in the .htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9
We tried this but it didn't seem to make any difference.
