Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
Hi, i had a site which i developed and set all the page titles and descriptions up in the menus. The site was doing very very well in regards to page ranking on google.
I have just redone the website with a new template using exactly the same backend titles and descriptions as well as content. The same site basicly but just looks different at front end.
I resubmitted the site map to google and what has happened is google is ignoring the menu title and descriptions but is now listing the article title and first part of the article text.
It is ignoring any titles, descriptions/meta information totally.
Any idea why this is happening? i dont understand why it is just skipping all the information because it worked perfectly fine before with the old template.

the only difference i can think off is that on the old site all articles were un-catogorised but with the new one i have them in a category??

It seems like google has crawled all the articles and has totally missed out the menu's navigation and meta info

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
I think i may have located the issue but will have to wait until google crawls the site map again.
On the new joomla site the robot.txt file was missing so i have added it. Would it be this what caused the issue??

The problem is probably with the Template

Also wouldnt the missing robot.txt file cause google to just index all articles instead of using the menus and sitemap??

Please confirm that in your Google account you have
New site - http://streamlinefibreglass.com
and
Old site - http://streamlinefibreglass.com/streamline
listed separately
Please also confirm that Google has a sitemap listed for each site. What are the urls for the site maps of each site ?

'view source' shows that your new site and old site
meta name="description" content=
Are different
Do you have a 3rd party seo extension ?

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
I have edited the home page on the new one but in general everything else is identical from the original. Im not using any 3rd party seo exstension as it was all doing just fine with the old template. Google showed the menu titles & descriptions perfectly as i had set them up.
The new one google is listing article name and some text from page. Its like i have no control over the information i have in there originally.
Page rankings that were originaly No.1 on google have now gone totally off the radar.
Really big head ache and im thinking to just revert back to old site design to get the rankings back that took me ages to get.

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
I do all the meta info in the menu items and the site map set up with Xmap. Has worked perfectly on other sites. this is the first time i have encountered this issue where it ignores the menus and takes the information from article name & content. Another difference from the old is that i have the articles in catorgory but the old was un-catorgorised. I dont think that would make a difference though because it should read the menu meta details and pages source information

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
The only thing i changed was the template design and added some extra content pages, other than that the menu navigation is the same as the original. I duplicated the old one and then changed template. Backend stayed the same. Could it be something to do with the menus used on each template?

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
site:http://streamlinefibreglass.com/ mould-making
finds
http://www.streamlinefibreglass.com/ind ... uld-making
The contents shown by the Google result does not match that in the Meta description or in the Article text.
Google use the Meta description but if there is not any then it uses the text on the page.
use 'view page source' in your Browser to check the meta tags of http://www.streamlinefibreglass.com/ind ... uld-making. If they match those in your menu item (for the corresponding page)
"We design and manufacture fibreglass moulds ..."
Then it is just a matter of Google not keeping up with your changes.

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
Thanks
i just looked on a different browser to check these results http://[spam]/ox2ydi and its still all miced up at my end :-o
Patterns, moulds, construction, interior, marine, retail, industrial etc
as an example are all showing article name and text.
Example - Astley brook is showing article title and begining text from article
but not the actually meta Title and description.
some are showing titles with wrong description
some are showing correct description but with no title and is using the article title instead.
Like bespoke--->
Bespoke - Streamline Fibreglass
streamlinefibreglass.com/index.php/bespoke-products
Manchester specialist in GRP/fibreglass flat roofing, fibreglass repairs, fibreglass pattern and mould making and bespoke fibreglass products
but should be like -->>
Bespoke GRP / Fibreglas Products Manufacturer | North West
streamlinefibreglass.com/index.php/bespoke-products
Manchester specialist in GRP/fibreglass flat roofing, fibreglass repairs, fibreglass pattern and mould making and bespoke fibreglass products
Another example - Astlet Brook
Astley Brook - Streamline Fibreglass
streamlinefibreglass.com/index.php/astley-brook
Manchester based design and build company contacted streamline fibreglass at the design stage of a huge house build program on the outskirts of Manchester ...
should be ---
Bespoke fibreglass window surrounds - Building products
streamlinefibreglass.com/index.php/astley-brook
Bespoke fibreglass building products for Astley Brook, a house build program on the outskirts of Manchester.
Is it all showing like that on your end? This is getting really confusing
Also i have "Include Site Name in Page Titles: [After/Before/None]" set to none but it is still
showing on google titles.

All menu items have title and description. is there a setting so it just uses the menu information. it seems to be taking information from various areas at random

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
i think it was the missing robots.txt file, i added it and re-submitted a few links in google webmaster area using the Fetch as Google. It seems without the robots.txt file i was letting the bots access style sheets and scripts, including the slide/banner which i think is where it was pulling the title from for some pages.
like this one http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=uk
you can see it in the source. Just have to wait now for google to update and re-cache all

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
If you Google
site:http://streamlinefibreglass.com/ mould-making
and click the dropdown triangle by result ... you can view the cached version " It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 16 Apr 2015 11:21:18 GMT"
And has the correct meta description in page source.
Why Google is picking up the 2nd paragraph
"We have the facilities and experience to undertake projects of all sizes and all descriptions in fibreglass mould making. The scale and diversity is endless."
Is a complete mystery to me
Wonder if it's because 815 other sites use the exact same wording ?
Addendum
It looks like Google will ignore the meta description if it thinks it less accurate ?

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624?rd=1The description attribute within the <meta> tag is a good way to provide a concise, human-readable summary of each page’s content. Google will sometimes use the meta description of a page in search results snippets, if we think it gives users a more accurate description than would be possible purely from the on-page content.

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
Hi again, i just checked again on the Moulds link like you suggested.
site:http://streamlinefibreglass.com/index.php/mould-making
Now it shows the wrong title but the meta description but the source code is correct.
Do you have any idea why the original rankings have all vanished even though the new site is identical (links. titles, descriptions etc) as the old one. The back end never changed only the front end but it seem now that google isnt giving the same results as i originaly had. Should i submit both sites maybe to get the original ranks back??
is it because of this

Re: Google is ignoring my Menu page title and descriptions
Could it be because the menu structure is different and therefore it is reassessing the site from scratch. Thus treating it like a new site ?

im not sure. The menu structure is identical really.
I have just noticed that on bing desktop search the results are exactly as they used to be and also using google search no a mobile.
It seems to just be with google desktop searches.
How can google show different results on mobile but they dont show on desktop.
Really strange
