Hi there

Do you mean turning a joomla site into a mobi friendly site?

I did try "Mobile" by Mobile Joomla extension. But I found it clunky and difficult to control templating. In the end I built my own mobile template for client, and setup an automatic redirect for mobile traffic to a subdomain m.unleashedtravel.com.au using a mobile device sniffer. The client wanted iphone traffic to stay on the main site and everything else to be redirected.

Took me forever to sort it out but got there in the end.

Try it out on a phone http://www.unleashedtravel.com.au

Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks for your advice. I will probably try that because i tried using the extension from joomlas website, and all it did was reduce the size of the webpage, which is not what i wanted.

Thanks

Visit mobilejoomla.com. They have a component that easily converts a site to
a mobile site. There are now some cool mobilejoomla templates out there.

One caveat, use your own iPhone/Android, not just the online iphonetester.com.
It didn't always work for me during development and was very frustrating.
When I started using my iphone to test, all went well.

Personally, I don't want to use mobilejoomla.com . It is complicated. There are a lot of parameters in the back-end (Many of them are not self explanation and unnecessary for a normal Joomla user like me).

I prefer available mobile versions of templates - Clean, lightweight & easy to use. You can search for some at http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=680&t=606694

I'm interested in learning how to make an app for my website, too. I have played around with a couple of programs and just can't get it to work. I am already using MobileJoomla and I agree it is pretty difficult to figure out when it comes to customizing the looks. But it is what I have for now, I would still love to do an app though. If anyone has any info to give on this, I would appreciate it very much~

Do you want to use joomla as starting point?

If so have a look at WeeverApps http://weeverapps.com/ as mentioned above

If you don't need to start with Joomla try:

http://jquerymobile.com/ Here's tutorial on how to use it. http://www.webvanta.com/webinar/675330- ... ickly-with

PhoneGap is another option http://phonegap.com/

It's unclear whether the world is going to go app or mobile web. There are pros and cons of both: Apps, at this stage, can access more of the phone functionality, but tend to be more expensive to develop. Mobile Web Development is multi-platform (works on all devices). The Weever App and PhoneGap are Hybrids Apps (take an existing website and package it for mobile).

@floatright would be a good person to get an opinion from.

No. By 'Mobile Web Development' I mean building websites with mobile phones in mind. From what I understand, all smartphones now ship with browsers in them. Therefore, in theory, all new smartphones can access websites.

I'm in to building Responsive Web Design websites for Joomla. @floatright has convinced me that it's better than the 'm.' (where js sniffs for a mobile device and redirects to a mobile friendly subdomain)

It is, I am so aggravated with using the templates and trying to customize. Are there any good looking templates out there to use for mobile devices but yet still be able to use the current template that I have now for my pc version? You know how mobile joomla will allow you to direct a subdomain and load a template specifically for a mobile device. like iphone template?

o sorry about that, I was hoping to find a different template that would go with mobile. Not sure how to do it, without using Mobile Joomla though because I want to keep my current template for the web browser and then have another one for the mobile devices. Not sure how to do this. Like have two template versions of my site like how MobileJoomla will let you do. I hope I explained this better.

What RSS component are you using? It probably depends on whether the template of the RSS component has been built using "responsive web design" or not.

Thanks, this looks like it will do the job for me, they've got a decent looking template. I'm a bit concerned about how complicated people seem to think this is though as I'm not really an expert at this. I imagine I will be back with some questions about this shortly!

It's better to use native Joomla 3.1 for a mobile site, rather than using extensions in J2.5.

hi guys! Do you know of a site template for a mobile app Responsive that is good and light?

First thing, when someone says they want a mobile app, that generally implies they want
to have a smartphone app on their phone that will launch and view a site as if it was an
APP. Then there are mobilejoomla templates that render a true mobilized website that
allows you to have a true mobile site interface, not just a responsive website.
If you want to have a website that adjusts to being viewed by a smartphone or
tablet, look for the templates that clearly note that they are RESPONSIVE. ( Caution:
not all responsive templates respond as advertisted) Example: Take a look at
http://demotemplates.joomlashack.com/ and you will see which templates are RESPONSIVE.
You can go to these templates using your smartphone and see how they will really look when you implement them.
As for creating a Mobile APP, visit: http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ and learn how to create an
app. I have created apps that work as launchers to responsive sites, but have not gotten them to work correctly with the MobileJoomla sites.
I haven't tried it, but there is a mobile template switcher extension at:
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... play/21785
which will detect user agent and assign template for a mobile/tablet user.
I have found using MobileJoomla and their standard templates (and premium templates)
the most reliable use of mobile templates. My sites have seen a double increase in mobile visitors since I implemented mobilejoomla sites.
