Hello -

I administrate a few sites that are using J! 1.5 templates. I tried to migrate the sites to Joomla 2.5 and the templates don't work anymore (front end comes up blank). All of the templates in question are by YooTheme.

What is involved in converting a J! 1.5 template to J! 2.5? I have been unable to find any tutorials or information. If you know of one, please let me know.

Unfortunately, I can't pick a new template because then my clients will ask "what happened to my site?" I'm hoping to make this migration seamless from their perspective.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

One way to do this is to start with a simple template - ie atomic. In that template, delete everything between your <body> </body> tags. Copy and paste into that space everything between your <body> </body> tags from your existing template. Delete all info in the template.css file and paste in the info from your existing template.css file. Update the templateDetails.xml file. Delete images in the template/image file and add your images.

There will still be other links, modules, etc that will still need to be updated, but this will give you some idea on where to start.

Another template tutorial is http://www.virtuosimedia.com/dev/php/ultimate-tutorial-how-to-design-custom-templates-for-joomla-1.6 This one does include numerous template variations (i.e. color, font, etc) which to me are totally unnecessary when building a 'simple' website. It does have some good info about what a template needs.

Or see http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Upgrade_Joomla_1.5_Template_to_Joomla_1.6

thanks!! i will try the experiment with the atomic template and update this thread with my results.

from your response, it sounds like there is no simple process to update a template to 2.5... the process will vary from template to template.

Unless you are one of those fortunate people who happens to be using a template that the designer has already updated.

OK i tried the suggestion with the Atomic template, but this is clearly way out of my league. I guess I'm going to look into hiring someone to help me.

I have two new questions...

Would it be possible for a Joomla expert to convert the template if I only have the template as-installed on the site? I believe the previous web designer modified the template so I don't have an installable version of the template (it only exists in the site's actual template directory).

Also, can anyone give me any idea as to how many hours of work a Joomla expert would need to convert a 1.5 template to a 2.5 template? I just need to figure out what an appropriate budget for this would be.

Thanks!

"Would it be possible for a Joomla expert to convert the template ... as installed on the site?" - Yes

"How much time?" - I might be going out on a limb here but I would think no more than 3-5, perhaps less.

I have migrated to Joomla 2.5 too (from Joomla 1.5) and fortunately RocketTheme has come-up with the Joomla 2.5 version of the Hivemind template I am using.

But even after installing the Joomla 2.5 version of template my site does not look like anything it was before.

What all steps do I need to take to make a Joomla 2.5 template look like the original 1.5 site I had?
