General Template Info

Post by Pirinisz » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:27 pm

Hello everyone,
it's so nice to be a member of this wonderful site. I really like joomla and already started using it for the creation of a site. I do have a couple of questions though. Here goes:
1. Which template should I prefer in order to use my own background? I'd really prefer a template with as many options about it as possible, rather than messing with the css and html files!!
2. If I want to use a joomla default template, like beez2, is it possible to replace the default images inside the template folder with my own ones and then make the template installation in order to have my own background?
3. A couple of day ago I downloaded a blank template but the manual isn't as clear as I thought about setting it up. Could I find a more clear manual about the default files of a template and the code included?
I just want to say that I'm not so much into the code yet, but I'm working on it! Thank you all so much in advance for your time!!!

  1. Phoc bild http://www.phoca.cz/download/category/5 ... -templates
  2. Best is to Download the beez folder ... rename the folder ... rename it's language files ... edit the manifest file ... zip up and install. Then edit. Easy for those who understand html/css.
  3. Simple enough for those who wish to learn. Most important is to have a method of viewing the edits immediately/quickly and to be able to undo the edit quickly. http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f ... =#p2777471 is one method
If you want to learn to edit Templates
  • Learn how standard html files work and the relationship between their div's classes/id's and css. No need to memorise all the code just understand the concept.
  • Compare a standard html file with a Joomla Template's index.php file. Notice how variables replace the text. Understand that the variables are given values by the choices made in the admin cp.
  • Then install Joomla with sample data and start playing. Just stick to those basic concepts and use Google or w3shools when you need to know something. If you find things you don't understand don't worry about them, concentrate on what you understand.
  • You may want to install a virtual server on your PC. It is often faster than practising on a remote Host.
