nested templates possible?

Hi.
I would like to know if there is a way of achieving nested templates. This is to fit a site that has one layout for the home page, and different layouts for the subpages.
All pages would have a common top section, i.e. Logo, banner, menus. If I had a top level template, I could alter common items, and all the subtemplates would inherit the alterations. Currently, if I make a change to a common element, I have to replicate that change across two or more templates manually.
I have searched for nested templates, but the most recent postings seem to be from about 2006.
