Re: Feed display caching problem

Post by oc666 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:02 am

Hey
I'm JBS member. I would like to help to squeeze this bug. I added 2 different feeds on Joomla 2.5.8, but I cannot reproduce it.
Bug item was open here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=29708, but we need more info such which rss feeds you used and which steps make it happened.
Thanks

Thanks for getting involved, oc. Here's a start:

Joomla version: various, up to and including 2.5.7 (haven't bothered to test .8 yet)
Template: various, most by RocketTheme
RSS feed example: http://feeds.feedburner.com/FreethoughtBlogs?format=xml
Module type: Joomla native Feed Display

What else can I tell you?

Is it happened on Joomla default template?
Could you test it on 2.5.8 with default template?

I forgot my feed: http://blog.greenme.it/wp-content/recen ... ttype=post
Just tried back with my arrangement: feed were shown but after a couple cache automatic empty (conservative, 5 minutes) "There are not feed items to display."

JBS support native Joomla cache and template. Did you contact gavick support for that?

I'm using Joomla 2.5.8 with a YooTheme template, using Joomla caching only - the problem occurs when I turn caching on, and stops when I turn it off.

Because I don't have this template, can the gavick support add here description of the problem?

It's not a Gavick's problem, they assured me
And this is true if you notice that many have this problem and with different tempaltes. The fact that mine is gavick's, should just be an element more to tell you, if possible, to solve this problem

I really don't know :(
But I can suggest another thing. This should happen becuase of something, common between many of us. Maybe a single plugin, maybe because of a component. I know it's very vague, and maybe it's the template (even if gavick say not their template, and people here have other templates).
Can you call for a global check (people has this problem)?

hi oc666
maybe you received the mail for the tracker
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=29708

Is it possible to reinstall, upgrade or whatever only the cache library? Can it be something misses for only some users, like me and the other here?

Hey
Why to upgrade the cache library? What is the problem?
In addition, see my comment in the bug tracker item you mentioned.

What is the problem of line #639 of cache.php?
public static function makeId()
{
$app = JFactory::getApplication();
// Get url parameters set by plugins
$registeredurlparams = $app->registeredurlparams; // line #639

I had the same problem with a Yootheme template. I have Cache set to Progressive in Global Configuration. I have htaccess turned on for Apache. I had the modules turned off for caching. Then I looked and found the SYSTEM CACHE PLUGIN was not enabled...Doooh :-[
So I turned it on and set "Use Browser Caching" to on also. Whala...works like it's supposed to. I also have my htaccess set for expired headers....seems to work...still testing all of it together.

Hi, I am also experiencing the isssue with J2.5.8. Feeds do not display in my module nor component until I clear the cache via the menu path Site > Maintenance > Clear Cache. Then after sometime, the feeds disappear again. Permanently disabling cache function is workaround for the issue.
realdtc wrote:We dont talk about the system-cache-plugin. It's the global system cache, which doesnt work with the rss-feed-module...
I'm not sure if that is an acknowledgement of it not working as intended or suggestion that the global system cache isn't supposed to work with the rss feeds. Certainly the Clear Cache function I mentioned references both a "com_newsfeed" and a "mod_feed".

Finally, I checked (and just registered with) joomlacode.org and there is bug #29708 listed with status "Not a Bug" - http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=29708
---
Sorry, didn't see a page 2 before my reply above. Anyway, I'm getting this with default template (a fair few 3rd party extensions though).

I am however looking further into doing something to the cache so that it will not cache or interfere with the RSS Feeds i am displaying on our site.
This will do it:
// FIX! Clean Cache
$cache = JFactory::getCache('feed_parser');
$cache->clean();
Upload your own default.php > /templates/yours/html/mod_feed/
to overwrite the core template as usual, and put this right after:

Code: Select all

if ($feed != false)
{
....
Took me some effort to find out WHERE the data is stored.

The fortune is that this way all other cache files will not be touched ;-)

Here is my conclusion to Joomla Cache....you don't need it. I have been working on a better idea. I have had much better results with this instead of Joomla cache and NONE of the headaches. I am using Mod Deflate on the server and using Var headers all in my .htaccess. The site loads faster better and does everything you need it to do. Open your .htacces and put this code in.

Code: Select all

    <FilesMatch \.(htm|html|css)$>
  Header append Vary: Accept-Encoding
  Header set Cache-Control "max-age=604800"

   ExpiresByType text/html "access plus 7 days"
   ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 7 days"

Test this against Joomla Cache using firebug https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/firebug/ Also check Pingdom Tools http://tools.pingdom.com
From what I have tested, it works better. I turn off Gzip on Joomla...turn off Global Cache...turn off System Plugin Cache...test with firebug....turn it all back on test with firebug....turn it all back off and edit the .htaccess with the above code...test with firebug. The .htaccess stuff works 10 times better more efficient and ranks better SEO wise than Joomla cache does. If you can prove different I am willing to learn. Solved all my problems with Joomla Cache once and for all.

Re: Feed display caching problem

I've had the same problem with a brand new Joomla! 2.5.8 (and subsequently 2.5.9) install, with both a default and a RocketTheme template. I have 3 mod_feeds on display. If I enable caching in Global Configuration, 2 or more mod_feeds invariably come up empty. Usually if I clear the cache and reload the site, all 3 mod_feeds will display correctly, but then clicking on any other menu makes some or all of them come up blank. I've tried this in several browsers and on 2 different PCs, this has no effect. I set the modules to "no caching", this has no effect. Without modifying code, the only thing that makes the mod_feed display consistently is to disable the cache.

I've finally given up and taken a previous posters suggestion and installed Jotcache - all my feeds are now displaying perfectly and the load time seems just as good as before. It's disappointing that I need to install a 3rd party component, though, to handle a core function that appears to have not worked correctly over several versions.

This seems to be a problem even in 2.5.9.
I have site where one of the feeds, sometimes more just appear blank.
As this is a core facility of Joomla I am surprised that nobody has fixed this yet, as looking at the forums it has been a problem for a long time.

Hey
I did not succeed to reproduce this bug. Can someone put step-by-step instructions in the tracker with Joomla core extensions (non 3rd party extensions):
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=29708
This will help us to squeeze this bug.

Thanks, Ofer

I have set up a raw Joomla 2.5.9 site and added feeds that we have had problems with. Unfortunately it all worked ok. We have fixed the problem by using Jotcache.
On the site that fails we have a number of extensions which include
Admin Tools, Akkeba Backup
Eyesite
Rawcontent
JCE Editor
JSN Imageshow (Joomlashine)
JSN Uniform
JSN Epic Pro template

I have a copy of the site so will try removing extensions to see which affects this.

Re: Feed display caching problem

I think I may have started to narrow down this problem, or at least I seem to have a site where I can demonstrate the problem.
I installed 2.5.11 with sample data as a test site at http://rss.theramblers.org.uk
I did install some extensions and a template but have uninstalled them.
Admin Tools, Akeeka Backup, Rawcontent and Joomla Shine Epic template.

Also moved some of the menus to different positions.
I added a feed module with title RSS Test Feed, it links to the rss feed at
http://www.ramblers.co.uk/walksfinder/w ... roups=DE02

The module is set to display on all pages. It seems to display correctly unless I log in to the site (option in left column) It then fails and just displays the the module title.
If I log out it displays again.

Is this useful? Do you need any extra information?
The username and password for this site is admin and password.

If this is useful I will leave the site there for a few months and then delete it. Please let me know

I can't believe this still has NOT been solved :-\
I'm running 2.5.11 and there's still a problem with the "feed display module"
I've tried enabling system-cache plug-in
no caching set in the module advanced options
global caching
still no luck.
If this is a bug why has it taken over a year and still not solved?
I don't want to use a 3rd party plug in to solve this, there must be another way?
anyone :'(
