Why do images rotate when uploading into Joomla!?

Post by Lorrie_9 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:06 pm

I am using a JUSlideshow into an article and after many hours of trying to figure out why some of my images rotate automatically when uploading into a desinated map. I have now discovered that the reason for this is probably during the upload. Some of the original photo's are standing and after being uploaded will be lying down?
I do hope that there is someone here to help me and does understand what I mean!
Thank you in advance
Lorraine

I assume these are Pictures made by a Camera.

Images have a height add a width.
Because yours are made with a camera,
all pictures have the same height add a width.

But in your case there is also an orientation.
Modern Systems do recognize them as well.
e.g. Photoshop recognize it.Or some of the moderen OS Systems

But you have this issue in the Media Manager because here the orientation will be ignored.

I would recommend stripping of all the Meta data from the images, with Photoshop or Gimp (or a other SW of your choice)

Then your images have the right width and height and do not appear rotated.

I recommend to do this in any case because Original Images from a camera are much to large for the Web.

the pictures were taken with my mobile phone and I have uploaded them straight from my phone. How do I get rid of the Meta data from the images? Does it mean that I would have to edit them first before uploading? What does SW mean? :-)

SW is short for Software ;)

If you uploaded it right form your Phone than it is exactly how I described it.
If you have a new Phone than this have an 8MP to 15 MP Camera.

This mean your each Image is 1 to 3 MByte and have a resolution form 4000 to 6000 pixel in width but an average monitor have only between 1300 and 2000px width.

So first everyone has to load more date then needed and second a lot of Meta data: when was the picture taken, maybe where and a lot of other information that nobody can see in a browser.

So using a SW like Photoshop or Gimp can create an image with only a width of 1000 to max 1500 px width and remove all the meta data. The result is that the image now have only 0.2 or 0.3 MByte and that is good for you because your visitor will love it not to wait that long 8)
