I have been getting daily violations of user registration on my site. A new user will show up with a bot-generated posting made to my forum.

This suggests to me that the ReCaptcha for user registration is not keeping the bots out.

Anybody else experiencing this lately? Is there a better choice than ReCaptcha?

are you allowing forum registration ?
consider that captcha is not a 100% solution to the spam problem
better in my opinion there are not perfect solution at all...

I resorted to requiring administrator approval to sign up for membership. A bit annoying, but stopped the bots.

Much of the spam these days is actually from real people, you might think it's bots. That means captcha is no longer a adequate defensive mechanism against spam.. frustrating I know.. but true.

We have captcha, but also other filters like url filtering, email verifications, as well as number of other "intelligence" gathering to try to predict the people that are just joining to spam users. We'll block known IP's once we are sure they are a spammer, though this has only limited benefits in the long run.

I was having exactly the same problem. I installed the extension "EasyCalcCheck Plus" from Joomla extension directory and it worked like a charm ;-)
