I followed the guide lines here: http://www.upubuntu.com/2011/11/how-to-install-joomla-17x-on-ubuntu.html

When I reached "- Start now the installation of Joomla 2.5.1 by opening one of these two links:
http://127.0.0.1/joomla

or

http://localhost/joomla"

I got:
Index of /joomlaNameLast modifiedSizeDescriptionParent Directory - Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80

I got no setup instructions. What did I miss?

The Joomla files are missing. You have unzipped the Joomla package to the wrong folder.
Put them in the web root folder. They may be "www" or "htdocs".

And to my next issue:
When I reached step 4 (Database)

I got:"Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL."

Database type: Mysqli (default)

Is Mysql running?

Have you created the database and database user?
The database credentials are wrong.

I followed the instructions - but still joomla step 4 results with error:
Code:
Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.

Can you connect to the database with phpmyadmin?

Is there a mysqli driver installed? Have you tried mysql?

Use the Forum Post Assistant to check out the server set-up.

Phpmyadmin: I have no idea. I was following installation guides, nothing was mentioned so far.
mysqli: same. I tried mysql, same result.
Post assistance: is that a forum name?

You have the mysqli library installed.

What do you get by typing http://localhost/phpmyadmin?

Did you create a database, username and password?

Try with root and blank password.

I created a database when i followed the http://www.upubuntu.com/2011/11/how-to-install-joomla-17x-on-ubuntu.html

I have no valid database, so everything can be erased/restarted, if it helps.

An alternative would be to simply uninstall what you have already done and install XAMPP for Linux, this is a preconfigured stack of Apache, MySQL and PHP. You might find this easier as you seem to be trying to learn about server installation and configuration as well as Joomla (which is perhaps where your interest really lies?).

Installation instructions are: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html#377

I installed LAMP, which I believe it's same thing as XAMPP, months ago. I have no problem to re-install it - perhaps it's the easiest.
Do I need to un-install and then install, or perhaps the installation process will do the un-installation part for me?
I am afraid that if I install over the existing, it will keep the "bad" setup parameters.

Well the default LAMP stack should be fine
Is this the LampServer from tasksel?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Apach ... _and_above

Create a database (on window's type stacks this is often an automated step whereas I have always done it on Linux with manual creation). Make sure that the user has full permissions for the database. (created as "root" this should automatically be the case)
Try the Joomla installation process again.

I installed it as you suggested, Until stage 3 all went fine, including the:
Code:
Starting XAMPP 1.7.7...
LAMPP: Starting Apache...
LAMPP: Starting MySQL...
LAMPP started.

But with additonal line:
Code:
XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running.

At stage 4, I didn;t get the XAMPP for Linux nice web page.

Instead I got:
Code:
It works!
This is the default web page for this server.
The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

This would tend to suggest that you had not removed the previous installation (or at least all trace of it) as this is the standard Apache welcome page and not that of XAMPP.

So further to previous note - not only are you taking on learning Apache, MySQL, PHP and Joomla but you are also new to Linux?

I would perhaps suggest you start looking for yourself at https://help.ubuntu.com/ . Especially as I had previously given you the link for the help pages that directly answer your question!

I am not trying to be difficult here but you really are taking on a lot and this forum is not really the right place to start for Ubuntu or indeed AMP issues that are not directly related to Joomla itself.

No- I am not new to Linux. But I usually install software via the software center - just a click and go - no need to search the web for guides which have 8 steps including config files editing.

I am not sure why users have to go through installation steps which are pre-known.

Perhaps I should have used Windows instead of Linux for this task from the first place, but perhaps also Joomla is not mature enough to be installed easily on Ubuntu, or maybe I am not good enough.

Thanks anyway.

The software center is only available on the Ubuntu Desktop. The Ubuntu Server does not have GUI and command line install must be used.

Since I was going in circles, i assume it is something I did with config files when I used PHP months ago, I decided to solve it the easy way - I reformatted the laptop and installed Ubuntu from scratch. Then I followed the instructions here:
And now iXAMPP is working, so is myphpadmin....

Time to install Joomla. I found several guides on the web, not exactly the same, but this one looked like most updated.
Is that recommended?

Whilst I think your approach of reformatting was a little "extreme" for the issues at hand I am glad you have a working XAMPP server as recommended.
If the guide works then it is fine. ;)
Also check out the http://docs.joomla.org/beginners pages for further information.

It is extreme, I know, but after many days of moving on step forward and two steps backwards, I just had to do that. I had a working LAMP environment, including few successful PHP projects, but I decided to move to CMS, and Joomla was my choice: because the name is cool and because the open source approach.

But: I am not there yet, as Joomla is not installed yet.

The first step of the guide is not working:
Code:
cd /etc/apache2/
failed, because no such directory.
I think it is located now in
Quote:
/opt
, but I need to be sure before I will need to reformat again :-[

I do not currently have a local Linux environment set up with XAMPP installed, however, a quick search on the XAMPP forums http://www.apachefriends.org/f/index.php reveals that this is located at /opt/lampp/htdocs.
Suggest you place a single "named" html or php file in this directory and test it by calling http://localhost/document_name. This will then confirm that this is indeed the location.
Searching those forums is more likely to provide the answers you need as that is all they are dealing with.

Thank you for following up with me.
However, I found out that every step I make - another issue is waiting for me, so I concluded that installation in Linux is just not out of the box yet with XAMPP-IDE-Joomla.
I switched to windows (I hate this move, but I really need to focus on learning and not on solving problems I can avoid).
After less than an hour I had XAMPP and NetBeans properly installed (out of the box). I am still re-considering if to install Joomla (or other CMS).
At this moment I am happy to see PHP and mysql code running, to make sure that XAMPP is properly working, not just installed :)

I hope that next week I will install Joomla and try it, not before I back up the disk image.
