Hi,

I have recently transferred my files from my localhost on Joomla to my paid host using FTP. This has worked (happy day!), but I am now making changes to my localhost through Joomla and am unsure as to what files I need to FTP.

Surely I do not need to to transfer all of the files again!. I am guessing it would just be certain individual files, but it is taking me longer to go through each folder, find last modified date and click each one. Is there an easier way? Or should I just transfer all files :/

Thanks.

(PS. I could be going about it completely the wrong way - If so HELP!)

Have you installed Akeeba as advised in your previous thread?

It seems that you may not have quite understood how Joomla works reading your other thread (referred to by Mitchell65) and your initial question here.

  1. When you add Extensions (Templates, Components, Modules and Plugins) these will not only add the files themselves to your joomla_root/ directories (where Joomla is installed) some will add tables, or at the least change the content of some of the existing tables on the database as well.
  2. Any content such as Media files or images are added to the joomla_root/ directories applicable.
  3. Any textual content that is added to any aspect of Joomla be it a new User, changes to the ACL permissions, an Article, Category, Menu, Image caption, Weblink, or indeed anything else is stored within the respective database table.
  4. So it is not just a case of uploading the files to the remote host that makes the change, the database tables are also required.
  5. However, if your remote site is live and new content is being added to it:
    • You will run into issues if you start creating different content of any description on the two installations at the same time and then try to update one with the other as IDs will be out of sync and more.
    • If you are just testing and installing new Extensions to your local site and decide you want them on the remote host too, then you should add them to the remote host separately (as new extensions).
    • If you are testing different settings locally that you decide you want on the remote site too then you need to make the same changes on the remote site in exactly the same way.
  6. If however the remote site is live but not receiving any new content or changes directly:
    • then the use of Akeeba locally and reinstalling on the remote site each time is an option, albeit a long-winded way of doing it.
    • It might be better to just record any changes you make (as you make them!) in notes and then once you are ready apply them to the remote host site in exactly the same way following your notes.
  7. Perhaps you need to look again at precisely what you want to achieve, in a bit more detail, and consider the best way of doing it.
    BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP
  8. Whatever you are doing to EITHER the remote site or the local site you should use Akeeba Backup to do its job and take a backup of the site so you can revert easily to the exact position you were in before you started making the change (just in case it all goes "t*ts" up ;) ).
  9. This applies to adding Joomla's or Extension's updates too.
  10. And at regular intervals thereafter

Sorry this finished up as a mini story, but hope it helps
