HI folks
I've unzipped joomla v2.56 source into my folder I called 'v256'
Setup MySQL - its ready.
Typed url & got...

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '=', expecting '(' ........htdocs/v256/includes/framework.php on line 42

These are the steps I have previously done for v1.5 on my hosting with 1&1.
I tried this twice.

Help what have I done? :-[

How have you "set up MySQL"?
What collation character set is it using?

HI Humvee,
I created a new database through MySQL admin on 1&1 - which is automatic.
I checked the collation set used is 'utf8-general_ci'

Are you using the Web Explorer panel on 1&1 to upload the Joomla package zip file?
Are you using a database that has had a previous installation of Joomla on it?
Did you press the Previous button during the installation process?
Suggest that you DROP the tables from the database using phpMyAdmin.
Delete the Joomla files in your v256/ directory
Download a fresh copy of Joomla 2.5.6 via http://joomla.org
Upload the Joomla package zip to the server using Web Explorer.
Unzip it using Web Explorer.
Rerun the installation process

I tried a fresh download & install.
Deleted the Joomla files in your v256/ directory
Created new folder V26
Downloaded a fresh copy of Joomla 2.5.6 via http://joomla.org
Uploaded the Joomla package zip to the server using Web Explorer.
Unziped into 'v26' folder using Web Explorer.
Reran the installation process
& got:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '=', expecting '(' ........htdocs/V26/includes/framework.php on line 42

What version of PHP are you running on the 1and1 host?
What package version do you have?
Is it Linux based or Windows based?

I had this error, and 1and1 supplied the following as a solution (it worked for me):

Open a browser and access your domain. In this example, the domain is http://1and1help.com/

When the domain points to the correct folder, you should see the Joomla! installation page. If you receive a message that you need PHP5 to run Joomla!:

1. Click the Start Menu and click Run.
2. Type notepad and press ENTER
3. Write AddType x-mapp-php5 .php in the text file and save it as htaccess.txt
4. Upload the file to the folder that holds your Joomla! files
5. Using your FTP program, rename the file to .htaccess. You must include the period before the filename.
6. Reload the webpage

hope this helps someone.

This applies to older Contracted sites where the PHP version included PHP 4 as the default version.

The default version on more recent accounts is PHP5.

You can set the Global PHP version from the 1&1 Control Panel.
By default this is PHP5.2.x by selecting PHP5 from drop down list.
Or you can use PHP5.4.x by selecting Dev from drop down list.

For some strange reason 1&1 chose not to use the most stable release of PHP 5.3.x for their servers but there is a campaign in their forums to get this instated.
