Joomla 2.5.1 "500 - An error has occurred."

Post by gevrey » Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:24 am

Hello everyone,

I have setup a fresh installation of Joomla 2.5.1 on a server which was completely virgin from any previous Joomla installation.
The installation went fine, DB installation too.
Now, when I try to access the Administrator Control Panel, I get the "500 - An error has occurred"

I have set the 775 permissions on administrator/cache cache tmp and logs folder, but I get the same error.

I have then activated debug messages and I get this (See below)

I have no idea what else I can do. Anyone would be kind enough to propose an idea?
Best,
Christophe

On some servers a php error log will be raised in the root directory. Using ftp, look for a file called something like "error_log", so if your site's in /var/www/html, then you're looking for /var/www/html/error_log.

Thank you Vimes for your response.

Unfortunately no error_log file is present in the root.
Any other idea on how finding out what causes that error please?

Yes. No error_log in the root (that's why I have pasted the complete directory listing)
And in the "error" directory there are only the .html files that hold the messages.

if you have the time and the kindness to help, you can find all IM where I am available here:

Thanks for your help.

Then you'll need to ask your hosts for the error log, or them to tell you where it's stored so that you can look at it.

So you are actually talking of the Apache error_log, right?
not an error_log generated by Joomla?

Ah, I managed to gain access to the error_log and this is what I get.
Does it help to help? Thanks!

I have checked something after reading the lines in the previous message, the following file does not exist:

After having re-applied the permissions 2777 to administrator/cache cache tmp and logs folders the problem seems to be gone.

Thanks

I had this problem when I turned on all of Joomla's error reporting while working on a 2.5 version of my XMovie component. Apparently Joomla tries to write to the logs folder but couldn't until I changed the owner to apache user. Didn't want to change permissions to 777. For some reason, the Joomla developers don't check if this directory is writable and instead fails with no helpful message at all. I ended up having to go through each related Joomla library file until I figured out what Joomla was trying to do and why it couldn't do it. Perhaps a Joomla developer might want to add some kind of error message to make it easier to troubleshoot.

Have the same problem. Tried everything: change log/tmp paths, change privileges, created new administrator via phpmyadmin, tried different browsers (FF, IE, Safari).

What could be wrong?

I was able to solve this same problem by going into the database: users table and manually finding the superadmin user. Once there, I noticed that "deprecated" was in the "usertype" field and cleared that. Then I changed "sendmail" and "activation" from "0" to "1" (in both fields).

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but it worked for me. :)

Cheers!

You guys should try doing what vixbow did. I was going to say the same thing but he beat me to it. It seems to be a logical solution. Try it out and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Hi there - another solution for above: I was getting the same 505... JAdministrator->dispatch() error (after upgrading) when clicking my default English language under Content, in Language Manager, as well as under User Manager clicking on my Administrator user and none of the above worked, but magically the error goes away and everything works when I ...

.... turned the debug off!! Site - Global Configuration - Debug System (no)

I had the original error 500 on a site I backed up using Akeeba. On the restored site, changing the directory permissions did not work.

I edited my super user and there was nothing in the user type. When I changed it to Super Users using PhpMyadmin (using MDA), I received an error in line one. BUT I could access the admin tool successfully. I did check the database in exensions manager and was prompted to update. So my guess is that php/ SQL version may have created my problem.

Maybe it helps...
