Installing Joomla on 1and1!

Post by w38 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:13 am

Hi Guys,

I've got a client with a site currently on 1and1 not written with Joomla but using php.

I've installed, and uploaded their new Joomla site to a testing subdomain (which was done a couple of months back) and now I want to transfer the test site to the main domain.

I presume my steps are as follows, if anyone can correct any mistakes I would appreciate it;

1. Take a back up of both sites (old site, and new test site)
2. Create a subdirectory (NOT SUBDOMAIN) ie root/new-site
3. Copy files over to new subdirectory
4. Point domain to new subdirectory
5. Edit configuration.php to reflect changes for domain

I presume this is it? I would like to leave the testing subdomain up so the client can play around with things before uploading. If this is the case, do I need to create a new database?

Currently my testing site is at http://www.test.mysite.com and I obviously would like the site to be found at http://www.mysite.com, presumably directing the 1and1 domain to the new subdirectory would not make it appear with any prefix to the domain name?

Any help would be appreciated!

Just go into the 1and1 CP and set the folder for www.yoursite.com.

But I would like to keep the test subdomain? Surely if i redirect the the folder to point to the current subdomain one would lose that ability?

If you want the test Joomla in the sub domain to be separate to the Joomla used by your Domain name Joomla ... then create a second database and use Akeeba to transfer your test Joomla to the Domain name's folder.

If you want the sub domain Joomla and the Domain name Joomla to be the same ... then point the subdomain and Domain name to the same folder.

Ok I thought that might be the case!

So referring to my earlier steps;

1. Take a back up of both sites (old site, and new test site)
2. Create a subdirectory (NOT SUBDOMAIN) ie root/new-site
3. Create a new database
4. Copy files over to new subdirectory
5. Point domain to new subdirectory
6. Edit configuration.php to reflect changes for domain

Yes or use Akeeba to create a backup.jpa to create Joomla in the new sub directory. It installs like Joomla does and you will need to change the database details during install.

Quick question,

Will the creation of the new database not affect where the data is being drawn from? Ie if the old db was abc123456789, and I'm creating a new db which is xyz987654321, by changing the db values in the configuration file, won't that point to information which is essentially, not there? ie all my old site info will still be in the same database? won't i have to export the database and then reinsert that exported data into a new database?

When you unpack the backup.jpa file the installer will run. It will promt you for putting in the new database details. It will then populate the new database. You will then have a database that matches the files.

I'll throw my two cents in here with my experiences to help any other users. What webdongle suggested was bang on, so I was kind of right. Be aware that 1and1 don't allow uploads larger than 2mb I think, so I had to get them to do the database transfer. This was because I didn't use the backup.jpa file.

It didn't take too long, about 3/4 of a day all in but that was due to some waiting around for 1and1 to upload the new DB.

Use ccasanova's cheat sheet for each step if you have the same query I had.

Hope this helps anyone.
