Questions about moving Joomla 2.5 to upper level directory

Post by chrol » Fri Sep 14, 2012 7:39 pm

Hello there,

I would like to move my joomla 2.5 website (ionosphere theme from rocketheme) from a sub-directory (http://www.mysite.com/test) to the upper level directory (http://www.mysite.com) and I have two questions.

1. Is the procedure the same as in Joomla 1.5 (as it is explained here: http://docs.joomla.org/Moving_the_site_ ... irectories )? Or are there any changes?

2. For more “security”, in case that something goes wrong is it better to download all the data (from http://www.mysite.com/test) to my pc and then upload it to the server again and in the new directory (http://www.mysite.com) ? or is better to use the control panel and just copy the files from the sub directory to the upper level directory?

Thank you very much

p.s I hope that I place my questions in the right category

Joomla 2.5 like Joomla 1.5 is pretty much directory independent. Just like with Joomla 1.5 when you move the contents of the sub directory up you only need to go into the configuration.php file and change the paths to the directories that are stored in the config file. I would recommend installing and running the free version of the Akeeba backup extension before making a move. Worst case you can reinstall your site from the backup into your root directory.

I typically develop sites on a cPanel hosting environment. When I make a site move like this, I prefer using the control panel file manager. As it's on the server it moves the files quickly plus it keeps permissions in tact. FTP transfers can get messy.

Good luck with your site move!

Always follow step 2 of your original post before making any changes or updates to your Joomla site - you will never get caught short if something goes wrong with a particular action that way!
