new to joomla so please forgive any ignorances !!

Normally when one forgets passwords usernames you get a prompt to await an email which will allow you to change or notify you of your password

I cant get into the admin back end of a new setup ( dont really know why as i've written down everything Ive done )

But there does not seem to be any access point in joomla to do this

Is this normal or am I missing something here?

No, joomla web administration doesn't have "forgot password menu", you have to edit your database manually for MD5 hash of password, let read this document

Hope this will help.

Rgds,

Just open your configuration.php file and look at about line 36 and you will see your user name and password that you set on installing Joomla

Sorry lead you astray there. I forgot to say that you can see the user name and password providing you set the same U/N and Password for your SMTP and FTP settings as for the admin. If not then you need to go into the database, sorry about that!
