Incapable of Installing on MAMP server

Up to date?: I am using the most recent version of MAMP (2.0.5) and the most recent recent version of Joomla (2.5.4)

Issue?: I cannot get past step four in the installation process (Where you enter MySQL information). I receive two different errors depending on the information I input.

If I do not use a password, I get this:

An error occurred while trying to create the database hearsay.
The user may not have enough privileges to create a database. The required database may need to be created separately before you can install Joomla!.

If I do use a password, I get this:

Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.

Solution attempts?:

• My Joomla package is in the MAMP htdocs directory.
• I have created both a user with all privileges that can be used globally and a user with database-specific use of all privileges.
• I have used localhost:8888 and localhost.
• I have used the database username with and without "@localhost".
• I have created multiple databases and tried them all.
• I have reinstalled MAMP and redownloaded Joomla.
• I know that I am most definitely using the correct password.
• I've pretty much done everything but give up.

Help please?

Mamp requires the db username root and the db password root see http://localhost/MAMP/?language=English obviously change the language where appropriate.

It may also help make things easier if you open the MAMP interface Widget and under preferences->Ports select the set default ports then you do not have to worry about the 8888 port number each time you start the localhost address.
