I am having this exact same issue (possibly.)

I get to the database setup portion of my install. It keeps trying to insert into tables that don't exist. I've tried running it with the "Remove" option and the "backup" option. Neither works.

I have deleted all of the tables in the database numerous times.

My first error is about inserting into <prefix>_schema. It can't insert into that, but if you hit next, it tries to continue. At this point, it just loops through and continues to error out. First, it tries to duplicate insert into jos_viewlevels. If I delete all the records in this table, it will reinsert them, and then tries to create the existing table jos_weblinks. If I drop this table, it tries duplicating jos_viewlevels again, which then creates jos_weblinks before trying to duplicate create jos_users. Deleting jos_users and trying again results in duplicate insert into viewlevels, duplicate creating weblinks, and then duplicate creating users.

The fact that the install script does not contain catches for duplicate inserts and SQL create table (IF NOT EXISTS) really boggles my mind for a product that is fairly well developed. I am to the point that uninstalling Joomla may be my best bet at this point and I can go back to my previous system (which works).

You appear to be reinstalling a site on top of an existing one, is that correct?

If you have a database already containing data and you dont want that data then use PHPMyAdmin to dump those tables.
Then you can install Joomla to that database. If you are trying to update Joomla! you seem to be going about it the wrong way entirely.

What are you trying to enter for the prefix? Are you following the instructions given?

Is this a local installation or one to a remote host?

If a remote host complete the Forum Post Assistant to assist in resolving the issue

If a local host what stack are you using and what is your OS.

This is a fresh install of Joomla using a fresh database and its own subdomain. This site itself is hosted on my GoDaddy development server.

I used GoDaddy's one-click installer to install the core files and set up the initial database. I then went to do the install portion. Everything was fine on the front page about what the requirements were and all requirements were met.

I don't know what a Forum post Assistant is.

but you mention the names of the tables having been created.
Is there a chance that after entering the database details at Step 4 the first time that you clicked next and then for some reason clicked previous in Step 5?

My advice still stands: Go to the database created and dump the tables within that database that includes any backup tables that have been created during your previous attempts.

If you have already deleted the installation directory at some point you need to completely restart the process using their installer program, if you choose to use it again.

You also need to go to the joomla_root directory and delete the configuration.php file that is there.

Restart the Installation process and Do Not hit previous button at any stage is probably the best bet, certainly not on Step 5. Also you do not need to enter anything at Step 5 the FTP layer.

Follow the installation procedure through to the end.
