Hi,

Im a beginner at all this and wanted to know if someone could help me with the following:

- I unpacked the 'Joomla_2.5.6-Stable-Full_Package' and uploaded it to my webserver.
- Ran http://www.mydomain.co.za/subdir/installation and got to the joomla installer.
- Went through all the steps and everything went smoothly
- Deleted installation folder (as required).

Problem is that when I run the front end, it returns blank. But the administration side works perfectly.

I already have a joomla already installed in the root of the domain (version 1.7.3) which works perfectly all round.

Checked and tried:
- Webserver is running PHP 5.3.3 (which should work, as read on certain posts)
- When removing 2.5.6 and replacing it with my root version 1.7.3 and modding the config file to read the new database, it seems to work.
- I then tried to update to using 'Joomla_2.5.3-Stable-Update_Package' with the different update methods, from local machine, from URL, from folder on server, none of them worked.
- Checked the log folder, also empty.

I checked through forums and sites throughout the day with little success, so decided to make a post.

Any help would be appreciated as I would like to run 2.5.x

Did you install the sample data? Have you assigned the menu module to a module position in your template? Do you have any articles?

Linda's question is correct but, please define "blank"; do you mean it is a completely empty browser screen, or (as with Linda's question) do you simply get the header and a simple menu on the left hand side and not much more?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, and, the page is completely blank.

I have tried with and without sample data, but the page remains blank.

I followed the other post before the page got split and went through the FPA and here are its details:

I had a similiar problem, I just uploaded a fresh PHP5.ini file and my issues were fixed.

You say these is a brand new installation yet you seem to have a number of Extensions already added together with a new template.
What happens when you switch to a default Joomla core template such as Beez 20? Do you have the same result?
Are you certain the Extensions you have installed are all 2.5 compatible and up-to-date?
Do you have an .htaccess file included in your 1.7.3 web_root site?
Perhaps you could also run the FPA in this site just to give the full picture.

Hi Humvee,

Thanks for your time, once again. I did the following

- deleted the subdir with the joomla copy.
- uploaded joomla v2.5.6 into subdir
- ran the installation (e.g. www.mydomain.co.za/subdir/installation)
- ran through the install without errors, and also installed sample data.
- deleted installation folder via end of installer button.

results. Admin page works out perfectly, i see all articles and catagories, etc. but mainpage is left blank.

here is a new FPA for the 2.5.6 install.

The support attachements folder is for the ticketing system i have running, dont think that would be an issue, right?

Test the site. (follow the advice below for editing and moving files to your server)

Make sure paths to tmp/ and logs/ represent the paths to the subdirectory and not just to the main site.
Test the site.

Try changing the

to

public $live_site = 'http://example.com/subdirectory';
Test the site

You may want to validate the true path to the web_root/:
It is likely that your path to /tmp and /log directory paths is wrong.

To find out what the absolute path is:
  1. Copy the following code into a text editor.
    • Do not use any Windows/Microsoft editors for this as they can add unwanted code,
    • Suggest you use Notepad++ or similar.
  2. Save the file with a .php extension
    • You can call the file whatever you like, for example, filepath.php.
  3. Using your FTP software upload the file you have just created to your web_root directory.
    • Again do not use Microsoft/Windows own software
    • Recommend using WinSCP or FileZilla on Windows)
  4. Open your web browser and type in http://www.example.com/filepath.php.
    • Obviously replace example.com with your own domain name ;)
  5. The output from this file will show the absolute path for your server.

Hi Humvee,

I really appreciate your input. But still not working, I feel its probably something small, but just cant get it. I remember when I did my first 1.7.3 install in the root, I had the same issue, but can't remember what I did to sort it out.

What I did:
- I renamed the 'htaccess.txt' to '.htaccess' (the file then disapeared off my ftp browser 'fireFTP').

- Used 'Putty' (ssh client) and logged into my webserver and then edit the file as instructed. (Still black page)

- I 'downloaded' the configuration.php file and changed the 'live_site' entry and instructed, removed the one in the subdir and uploaded the edited one. (Still blank page)

- I checked the log and the tmp folders if they were correct (I remember checking them before, but just made sure. I logged into my root install (1.7.3) and checked its log and tmp folders and corrisponded with my subdir install (2.5.6) and its the same, with the subdir added in the 'path'.

- Also I ran the path.php script just as an additional reference, with the same results.

I sent you a pm with some details.

Hi,

Ive tried many things up to now, loads and loads.

I even contacted my hosting company, they couldnt really help me, but said I should enable PHP error reporting, I've tried in the ways they explained, but couldnt get anything to show on screen or either in a 'log' file.

What I did now, is renamed the 'index.php' to 'index.php.backup' in the joomla 2.56 subdir and copied my index.php from my joomla 1.7.3 install and put it in the subdir.

Now it displays items to the screen, but clearly not the way its supposed to look.

Gonna see if I can further a better solution.

Just as a check - have you reversed my previous suggestions? They were not all intended to be permanent changes.
What path is showing for the /tmp and /logs directories in the 2.5 and 1.7 configuration.php files?

If by reverse you mean undo the changes made, then I have.

Root Install Paths:

The results when running <?= $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; ?> is /usr/www/users/name

P.S. I replaced 'name' and 'subdir'
