I am trying to run joomla with an offline site that doesn't exist.... I was told to get XAMPP because i can't do that with WAMP I guess.... I want to just simply practice with joomla while at home without having to practice on my work computer at work on the REAL website.

I am going freaking nuts.... i am at my breaking point after 3 days of figuring this out! How in the world..

So here's whats up.
I have XAMPP installed on C drive
I have the joomla 2.5 zip with all those files in it....

What, do, I, do, next.

and once I do that... what is the process from starting up my computer... to opening up joomla and having a site ready to play with?

I guess i'm struggling with the dynamics/concepts of how everything functions and all but.. I cannot find any decent instructions that are in simple english.

Sorry for my frustration,
MANY thanks to those that give input :)))

Review of the document http://docs.joomla.org/Getting_Started_with_Joomla! would be of help.

The thing is i did review that doc, inside out. I'm not grasping it at all.

I really do appreciate the help imanickam, but something just isn't sinking in from the docs....

Download and install 7-zip archive manager. (Don't use Windows archive manager)
Right click the Joomla 2.5.6 Package
Select 7-zip->Extract Files
Extract the files to c:\xampp\htdocs\your_site
Start XAMPP Control Panel
CLICK Start Apache
CLICK Start MySQL
Enter http://localhost/your_site in the address bar
Follow the onscreen instructions.

At Step 4 Database Details
username = root
password = (nothing, blank, nada!)
database name = whatever you want it to be

At Step 5 simply click Next

At Step 6 the Username and Password are what you will use to access/administer the site itself, and are not the same as the MySQL password and username.

Make sure you install the Sample Data.

PS and there is plenty of information out there and in plain English, including Web sites, documents and videos. You do actually have to do a bit of work yourself.
