I have downloaded xampp. Then downloaded Joomla 2.5 and unzipped in htdocs by creating a Joomla folder within htdocs folder. However, when I type http://localhost/joomla I get a 404 error message "The Webpage Cannot be found"

Please help

Right click the xampp short cut icon
Shortcut tab
Advanced
tick the run as Administrator

Run xampp and start all 3 services
type in your Browser http://localhost it should redirect to http://localhost/xampp
First time you do it .. it will ask to chose your language.

Then make sure that your Joomla folders/files are in your joomla folder and not in a containing folder
Your joomla folder should contain folders including
/administrator
/cache
/components
and files including
htaccess.txt
robots.txt

Make sure they are there and not one folder down.

Then try http://localhost/joomla

Thanks. Got through this part.

However, now I am stuck on another stage. I am getting an error message: Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.

Please help me tide over this step

Typed it out so will post for others to see

The 'mysql' service needs to be running
You need to create a database
type in your Browser http://localhost it should redirect to http://localhost/xampp
Then click 'phpMyAdmin' from the menu on the left
Then in the next screen click the 'Databases' tab
Type in a name for your database then click 'Create'.

During your Joomla installation the database details are
Host:localhost
Database name:the name of the database you created
Database user:root
By default there is no password.
