File errors reported (2.5.8 install)

Uploaded fresh copy of unzipped 2.5.8 to empty directory in public_html.
Started installation using browser.
Got these errors.
Any suggestions?

INSTALLATION/SET-UP
Various errors displayed - as below - although the language selection menu was displayed correctly between the error messages. Selected English GB, clicked Next.
Next screen doesn't load. Error messages displayed, identical to those with the first page, and page loading continues indefinitely.
The file 'session.php' is present (in [domainname]/public_html/so/libraries/joomla/session/session.php) with permissions rwxrwxrwx (in the unzipped copy on disk) and at least 755 on the server set by me.
