Test Joomla Site

Post by jimleeder123 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 10:47 am

I have a site that needs updating from Joomla 1.5 and VM1 to Joomla 2.5 and VM2 (the best our server is compatible with).

Is it possible to have a domain like www.randomwebsite.co.uk/test, and put all the files in the test folder so the test site can be seen there only? The live site would still be active on www.randomwebsite.co.uk. Is it possible to have it like this? Or would I have to get a subdomain like www.test.randomwebsite.co.uk?

I would then upload the same site on the test folder as a test, and link it to a test database.

Is this possible please?

You will need a n upgrade to at least J3.x to be safe. Even 2.5 has reached EOL
You mention best you server is compatible with then means upgrading the server too.

Aside from that you can indeed create either a sub domain or folder. My preference would be a sub domain. Easier to maintain, secure and disable when needed. And in your case you can easily setup this subdomain on a compatible server...

But you can also just setup some XAMPP on your local machine to get your upgrades going...

It won't be possible to upgrade our server - there are many websites on our server that would be affected if the upgrade won't wrong. Therefore we decided not to do it, so the best we can do is Joomla 2.5/VM3, but we're having problems with the VM3 admin order confirmation e-mail anyway.

I've created a test folder as we would have to pay for a subdomain.

.. you have to pay for a subdomain? why?

If you have many sites on "your" server, you probably have more sites to upgrade..
You will run into all kinds of security trouble if you don't.

If it is on a (v)ps, you should be able to select different PHP versions per virtual server.. (vhost)

If you cannot/or your provider cannot, consider another hosting co.

No my company has its own server. I'm pretty sure you have to pay for subdomains, I remember having to buy 2 for a client on 123-reg.

I have never seen a host charging for a subdomain. Change host if they do!

LOL. Addon subdomains are always free. Most of the time you can add as many as you want. You only have to pay when you assign a dedicated IP to each.

We have our own server, that was just registering domain names. It was a while ago, might have not been part of the deal
