I am superadmin and I created a new user called "manager" for myself because I can edit directly from the front end doing this without having to go into the back end. However, some of the articles have a lock icon on them and others don't. I don't remember doing anything differently to these articles so I don't understand why some are locked and some aren't. I would like to remove the lock. How can I do this? And how can I prevent the locking happening again? I am not sure, but the locked icon seems to appear with articles I have recently edited as a superadmin.

SOLVED.

Apparently, I must have closed the tab without saving or closing the article and this caused the lock symbol to appear. To unlock, I should check the articles I want to unlock and then click "check-in" at the top in the Tools menu.

The locked icon appear when you had a article in the edit mode and closes your browser or use your browser "Back" button without cancle or save. You can clear those by going to the backend control panel Content -> Article Manager -> check those article with locked icon and click on "Check in" button.

Or you can click on Site -> Maintenance -> Global Check-in -> select the tables which have Items to check-in not equal to zero, eg. j_content table, then click on Check in button
