Normal solutions not working; Joomla Update not working

Hi,
I've got a site on CloudAccess. Joomla updater was telling me that I had the most up to date version of Joomla, but it wasn't true (I had 2.5.15). As a result, the site got hacked. CloudAccess fixed it for me which was nice, but then they told me the problem was that I didn't have auto updates on.

That doesn't sound right. I should still be able to go into the back end, and see that a new version is available and make it so.

I have another site with exactly the same problem (not hacked tho).
I went to Extensions/Database and purged the cache. Then I went to Updates and clicked on "Find Updates". I got these error messages:

I can't do a "clean install" of Joomla, because CloudAccess manages that. What do you think is going wrong here and how might I fix it? Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, I can't update either. I downloaded a package of Joomla 2.5.27 and Vituemart 3. I want to update to Joomla 3.* before I build the site but it says that I have the latest version. Tried the purge, no difference. The message i get is,

"Update: :Extension: Could not open http://virtuemart.net/releases/vm3/plg_ ... update.xml"

That has nothing to do with Joomla update, I think.
I am building offline on XAMPP.
Can anyone help me further? Thanks in advance.

At the moment I have the live site going on Joomla 1.5.* and dont know how to get it up to J3 and VM 3.
