Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
I have tried all three none work.
my problem is when I use say for instance www.mysite.com/reviews/storage/10242
Just using the article #.
Of course my articles are more than 1 page so if I click on page 2 I get a 404 category not found error.
if I use the full alias say www.mysite.com/reviews/storage/10242-my-review then there is no problem.
has anyone found a fix for this? I have just started using 2.5 and I used j2xml to move over the content.

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
I have the same problems after a migration with jUpgrade from 1.5.26 to 2.5.4.
I always have to click the rebuild button in the menu system to get rid of the broken URLs (eg. /Categories/news.html).
Only problems with new articles.

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
I have tried the rebuild option and that does not work either.
Moving to 2.5 from 1.5 drop down TOC is not supported. So I am using just page #'s on the bottom instead of the article index.
Some of our reviews are 26 pages long and with my template the article can actually be 3/4 of the way down the page.
I am beginning to think the issue is the page index.

A solution for some!
This will not fix the issue for all.
I too fell pray to this issue only to find such a simple solution.
It stems from upgrading from 1.5 to 2.5.x
Administration -> Components -> Redirects ->[show all] [select all] [delete all]
Clear whatever cache you may need and refresh your site.
I hope some of you find this to work!

I have the same problem here, upgraded site from 1.5 to 2.5 using jupgrade. Now if I create a new Category and then add a menu to category blog to that new category it gives me 404. If I use an existing category or copy and existing category then everything is fine.
Any ideas?

Yes tried that, completely turned off all SEF URLs too but with no avail. It seems it does not like newly created categories.

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
Any solutions yet?
I have J2.5.6 and JCE 2.0.21. I have .htaccess with some specifications for server.
In my tests, it's not about JCE at all... No affect when turning JCE off.
Problem has something to do with how Joomla SEF rewrite engine is making SEO friendly URL:s. It seems to miss correct id's or something from categories and articles when lot of child menu objects.
My menu is
Menu 1-category blog layout-working
Menu 2-category blog layout-working
Menu 2.1--category blog layout-not working-gives 404 category not found
Menu 2.1.1---single article-only working when opened from another menuitem
Menu 2.1.2---single article-only working when opened from another menuitem
Menu 2.1.3---single article-only working when opened from another menuitem
Menu 3-category blog layout-working
Menu 3.1--category blog layout-working
Menu 3.1.2---single article-working (for some reason!!!)
Menu 3.1.3---single article-working
Menu 4-category blog layout-working
When I turn of SEO and Rewrite property from Site > Clobal configuration, all of these menu items WORK with horrible long address.
With SEO and rewrite turned ON Menu 2.1 and Menu 2.1.1 is working, ONLY when I change its property parent item to "Menu item root" as it was Menu 5. So is it too many child items for menu items and SEF?
Rewrite seems to be working though in some cases, even URLs with many slashes like http://www.address.com/menuitem2/menuit ... rticlename
Though, this problem only seems to occur just in some categories... Even they are done same way. Some of categories are imported from J1.5, but it doesn't seem to have any reflection to that; some of 1.5 categories work, some dont.
I'm confused---!!!??? aaaarrrgh. Is somebody familiar with rewrite rules?
Should .htaccess have some kind of other rewrite rules? I have for example:

My category 404 error solution
I have spent HOURS trying to figure this out and FINALLY...
Problem started when I created a Articles Categories module and selected a category. What I wanted was an automatic subcategory menu to add to the sidebar instead of having to manually add each subcat as a submenu. I added the module to an article and none of the category links works. The only way they worked is if I manually deleted everything after the category number in the url. I checked the category I checked all settings. I added the module to each page and each menu item to see what would happen. what I noticed is if I am at the home page the link is
When I am in another menu item say "about-us" the link is
and the same for any other menu item when I select the cat link in that module.
from the way the links were I decided to create a hidden menu item in my hidden menu (every one should have a hidden menu). the menu item type category blog and the category is the parent that I had selected in the module. and BAM the links now show and no more 404 error.
So the solution is create a category menu item (hidden or not your choice) of a parent category.

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
None of the above solutions solved my problem. Here's what I had to do.
I just migrated from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5 and during the import the incorrect root was entered into the categories database for some reason. So, I had to delete the wrong root entry (id=1 fro me) from the categories database table and run a mysql query for the correct entry:
Then I had to look through the joomla database tables assets and categories to make sure all the 'parent id' entries were aligned properly. I also made sure that the category's 'path' column was properly set, but I'm not sure that did anything. In any case I'm error free now.

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
Have 2.5.6 site, and had an issue with an incorrect categori being inserted into the SEF Urls being generated. i.e. "Clients" was the name of the category.
Went to phpMyAdmin to manage database. Clicked on Operations tab and selected the jos_categories table. Down the bottom did a repair table. Went back to site, cleaned cache and its all good.

Hi
I have Joomla 2.5 on local host, after some changes in my main menu + editing some name in some article now I get 404 page. I would like to know how could I find out that which page is causing this problem?
In the Redirect part I can see that there is: index.php in list of: out of reach URLs, could I use this component to solve my problem or any other solutions.
In addition SEO is off on my site.
thnx

Re: Three solutions for error: 404 Category Not Found
Possible other solution:
I spent 2 days to find out, category-aliases (if using SEF) MUST NOT START WITH NUMBER !
eg. "1.Cat", "2.Cat" gets automatic aliases like "1-cat", "2-cat" which break SEF
--> manually change to eg. "cat-1", etc...
Hope this helps someone!
Regards,
Reinhard

I have another alternative solution: none of the above answers worked for me, it was driving me crazy... until I changed the language of the menu item from "all" to the specific language... works like a charm!

Bingo! Thank you!anoakes wrote:I have found that using the rebuild button on the affected menu items solves the problem - but you have to rebuild every time you edit the menu item.

if you have installed joomla under sub folder, make sure you have set correct RewriteBase in .htaccess file. I have wasted my time for this error

I found an easy solution for Joomla 2.5 (but it includes a core hack).
This modification changes the category content module to handle the generated URIs correctly.

This core hack solved my issue! I have a 2.5.17 and it was a migrated install from 1.5.
Thank you very much for studying the issue and coming with a resolution.

Hello,
I've tried everything that says on this forum (and google) but still no success. This is really *** me off. I'm using Joomla 3.11. Are there any more solutions ? Funny thing is if i turn down SFO than and then if i select article it just says "invalid token".
Edit: Absolutely fantastic. I tried to update to 3.2.1 and now i can't access the page.

Reviving an old threat, but maybe ill helpful to someone.
The situation
Old J! 1.x site upgraded to J! 2.x then to J! 3.x - using different upgrading tools.
Currently any new menu we added or any existing menu we edited, it's path would get an additional "Categories" in it.
would become
No SEF issues, recommended solutions from this threat all not working (yeah well except doing a menu rebuild every time we created or edited a menu).
We actually dealt with this situation for years, the site was just too large to redo for just this issue. And it was not as if we were adding / editing 532 menus per day.
But I got really fed up with the issue, and on a Saturday was eager to solve this once and for all. Bumped into this threat, but to no avail. Started poking in the database and found one particular interesting item referring to "Categories".
The totally unused Weblinks component.
Look here:
Sort of made my radar go haywire, being the only real reference to "Categories" in teh grand scheme of things. Since we don't use the Weblinks component at all, I decided not to put any effort into looking any further and decided to uninstall.
Voila! Problem fixed!
