Hi guys,

So we have a live joomla site but the question is now wich is the best and the correct way to mantain and update this live site.
So I will ask you the Joomla gurus and veterans to share with us beginners the best practice, the ways,modes and tools you use for this.

I know one method is to make make changes on a clone site and then upload that changhes, but this way raises several other questions such as;

1. It is necessary or not to put the live site offline when make this updates?
2. Which is the best way to make changhes to the database (both for new components and the existing one wich already have a lot of records in tables)....

Another method I think is to put the live site offline and make the changhes directly on this but I think in this way the time the site will be offline is much longer ..

So what do you belive is the best way to mantain and update a live joomla site ??

Thanks in advance and any advice will be more than appreciated...

I rely on your previous experience with joomla...

Hey!

Answers:
1. Only if the change is big enough that it could effect traffic to your site over a period of time while you're are making it. Small changes like new content and new urls are not a problem. But redoing your template design for example you will want to do on a clone site.
2. Not sure why you need to make changes to the database. But usually your hosting provider will give you access to phpmyadmin. I would make changes there if I had to.

There is no sure-fire way to maintaining Joomla, but there are some good plugins that help. Admin tools, Akeeba Backup, sh404SEF, NoNumber Extension Manager are great to name a few ;)
