I am trying to find a way where our users can access one mutual image folder hosted on the server that is outside the domain root of Joomla.

I haven´t found any solutions for this as it seems that Joomla restricts image access from editors to the domain. We have 40 domains that needs to use the same image folder on the server - needless to say we dont want to put 40 image folder on the server if possible to use one.

Could use Dropbox as a solution here. There's a Dropbox extension that will link your Joomla to a specific Dropbox folder. If everyone's Joomla was linked to the same folder, everyone could access it and share it.

It's a commercial extension, but may be worth trying.

Thanks for taking time to answer this. I tested this but I wanted to get something where users could add these images into articles as well. Perfect; would have been like for example the JCE editor that shows folders and sub folders however outside the domain root. This component does not integrate with articles as far as I could see so it is not quite what I am looking for - any other suggestions?
