Cookies expiring - Bad Request

Hi, I am running J2.5.7 and for the last month or two my users keep getting a problem with their cookies expiring. The main extension on my site is kunena forum. Really need to find out what is causing this and how to fix it!

What happens is that you are just surfing the site and then all of a sudden you get a white screen with this error message:

Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.

And then it lists the cookies:

Initially try clearing the site cache.
Also advise on whether you have the cookie settings in Global Configuration being used.

I dont appear to have the cookie setting used in my global config.

not sure of how to set this? I don't know what a cookie domain or a cookie path is?

Is it something I've configured or is does this happen for others? Do I need to fill out the cookie path and domain? If so what do I put in there?

still happening on all different parts of my website, not just the forum. ive done some googling on cookie path but still don't understand it. can anyone please assist. thanks

I think i have the solution:

The problem appears to be because permanent cookies are set by the Font Resizer in my shape5 Vertex template, for each page in the site (code is in s5_font_adjuster.js). Eventually, there's a huge cookie that creates the error message:

"400 Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Size of a request header field exceeds server limit"

Disabling the resizer seems to stop this. Only a few session cookies are set and all is well.
