temp folder unwritable

Post by azrielMSG » Sat Aug 16, 2014 10:04 pm

Hello.

I am having problems installing anything via the backend, and if I try to install the files manually using ftp, they do not work. I have done some research, and the reason for this is that my temp folder is unwritable. Can you please let me know how to change it to writable? I have edited the folder permissions in the ftp, however, although they are set to read, write and execute for owner, group and public (777), the directory permissions still lists it as unwritable.

Because of this I am unable to install any updates/extensions. It may even be the underlying issue for my other problem: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=624&t=856188
I am running version 2.5.9. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd recommend changing your folders and file permissions back to the recommended settings (Folders = 755, Files = 644).

Some hosts require you to use the FTP setting inside Joomla. Try enabling FTP in your global configuration. Make sure your FTP details are correct in your Global Configuration settings. Once you have done this, and you are 100% positive your FTP settings are right, try installing your extensions normally.

If you still are unable to make any changes to your files or install extensions, I'd recommend connecting with your host and seeing if they have given you the wrong group or ownership permissions. This happens sometimes, and basically means that only the host can make changes... not the end user. This should be a quick fix on their end.

Would you mind posting how your problem was resolved, just in case anyone down the road runs into the same issue.

turns out i didn't have my temp folder pointing to the correct directory in the config file. instead of being:

/public_html/tmp

it needed to be:

/home/"ftp username"/public_html/tmp

.... rookie mistake (facepalm) :)
