I stupidly updated my site to 2.5.5 without backing up my site and it seems to have completely f'd up my site.

I had it all working nicely with a Russian translation with the menu associations working a dream. The flags appeared on the pages I wanted.

After the update it looks like any page without a russian equivalent comes up with

Fatal error: Call to a member function get() on a non-object in /data03/******/public_html/modules/mod_menu/helper.php on line 100

When I click on a site with a russian flag to show the translation it shows none of the russian pages, just the error above and the /ru after the page title.

I wanted to wipe it out and start again but its messed up loads of stuff for some reason.. If I turn off the RU language it hides the flags but some of the UK pages aren't working now... which I think is related to them not having a association

Am I just unlucky or is this a bug?

We are aware of some issues concerning 2.5.5 and the bugsquad is working on them to release as soon as possible a 2.5.6.
The error you describe though is not one of them and I can't reproduce the issue here with a multilanguage site

Could you list the 3pd extensions you are using?
Was your site a 2.5.4 site?

Yes it was a 2.5.4 site. What it seemed to do is break all the language links and with alot of disabling and uninstalling I ended up uploading a backup copy of the mod_menu folder and it worked again. I had already disabled the language pack when this happened so am not sure if that was the reason alone that fixed it or a combination.

I did update the language pack during this morning also as I noticed there was an update to the russian pack I was using taking it to 2.5.5.1.

It appeared that when the update was isntalled all the /ru sites failed and the gb ones which didn't have a association failed also. The problem was when I clicked on the russian flag it gave me the error above but kept me in the russian part of the website.. so I used the back button and tried a new menu and it failed as it was still in the russian bit.

It eventually failed the entire website so I couldn't even get an english homepage. I tried redoing the menus which did a strange thing.... when I recreated a top menu that failed the other menu that previously failed worked.. but when I disabled that old menu the rest of the menus failed so I think it must have been this menu module that got messed up.

I only have a few 3rd party extensions.

Simple Spotlight
PhocaDownload
show/hide
ITLgooglesearch

Hope this can help, I am going to have another crack at installing the language packs tonight./

Yes, your issue is a known problem with menu aliases that will be fixed with the new 2.5.6 that we will release today. This is the fix in the bug tracker:

Later today 19 June 2012, hopefully. Developers are working hard to resolve the issues but no "absolute" guarantee that it will be ready, but literally a matter of hours rather than a matter of days.

Thanks very much. I've found that disabling the menu item in question via the admin problem allows me to continue running the site. Thanks for all the hard work, it's always much appreciated

There were issues with Joomla 2.5.5 and this has now been updated further with Joomla 2.5.6.
Run the Update manager again and make sure to check the Database tab in the Extension Manager and click the Fix button to make sure the database is up to date too.
