Any help appreciated. Do you know if there is a straight forward way of upgrading from joomla 1.6.4 to either 1.7 or 2.5?

My reason for wanting to do this are that a couple plugins i am trying to use appear to be incompatible with 1.6 (the plugins are mass content and auto read more)

Does anyone have a step my step guide of how to upgrade from 1.6.4 to either 1.7 or 2.5. I am open to suggestions as to which is best to upgrade to

thank you

It might be worth trying the Jupgrade addin to upgrade to 2.5.6.

It creates a new folder - Jupgrade - within your existing site and leaves your original site intact.

Check http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migration-a-conversion/joomla-migration/11658 for more information.

Hello,
this is not a migration, but just an update. You don't need to use any extension like JUpgrade (its for 1.5 to 2.5), you can have a look at this article :
http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_from_J ... Joomla_2.5
I adice you to do a backup before.
Joomla 1.6 an 1.7 are not anymore supported.

thank you for all the pointers.

I followed the steps in the first post in this forum, when i purge the cache and select to check updates, there are no updates listed.

Any ideas as to why?

I then attempted the second posting listed

http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_from_J ... Joomla_2.5

This article describes how to manually install via the extension manager. I downloaded the package Joomla_2.5.6-Stable-Update_Package.zip I unzipped and saved it to a local folder and then tried installing it via the directory and selecting my local folder. I now receive the following message:

Warning: require_once(C:\wamp\wamp\www\backuppanache/libraries/import.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\wamp\wamp\www\backuppanache\administrator\includes\framework.php on line 32

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'C:\wamp\wamp\www\backuppanache/libraries/import.php' (include_path='.;C:\php5\pear') in C:\wamp\wamp\www\backuppanache\administrator\includes\framework.php on line 32

I can no longer access the backend administrator. The front end website is still accessible.

I had created a back up of the site before doing any of this and can access this still but obviously still in version 1.6

All help gratefully received

It may be a complete red herring but you have www\backuppanache/libraries specifled

Should this be www.backuppanache/libraries?

Is the answer to uninstall 1.6.4 and then install 2.5

I can make use of my template, index files and then upload again the plugins, recreate the articles and menus?

Do i need to do this or is an upgrade possible?

Should you adopt this approach, suggest you keep the existing site and install 2.5 in a new area.

If you only have a few items (such as categories, articles, menus etc) it may be easier to recreate these on the new site.

Once you are happy with your new site, you could use Akeeba Backup and Kickstart to copy this to the old site.

ok successfully installed joomla 2.5 and all working well

Not ideal as a migration would have seemed more sensible but fairly painless to transfer my content

One bonus is that I am getting very quick at creating backups using akeeba/kickstart before any major changes

Thank you everyone for all your help and pointers
